HONORS THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF COUNTY RESIDENTS WITH PROCLAMATIONS
Several Prince Georgians were honored with Council
proclamations during Tuesday’s session, including Town of Upper Marlboro
President Tonga Turner, as the first African American elected to the Board of Town
Commissioners, and Town of Upper Marlboro Commissioner Wanda Leonard, as one of
the first two African Americans elected to the Board of Town Commissioners. Commissioners are elected by the residents of
the Town for a two-year term every even year on the first Monday in January
that is not a holiday. The president is selected by a majority vote of the
Board after the election. Town of Upper Marlboro Police Chief Calvin
Washington, the first African American appointed to this position, was also
recognized by the Council. Owner of J.D.
Clark Professional Services, LLC, Tisa J.D. Clark, received a Council
proclamation for being among the County’s top women-owned businesses. And 5th
Grade Tulip Grove Elementary School Teacher Daleisha Myers, Prince George’s
County Teacher of the Year, was also honored by the County Council. We wish Ms. Myers the best in the state
competition!

COUNCIL APPROVES APPOINTMENTS TO COUNTY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS
During Tuesday’s session, the Council approved the appointment of the following individuals to the Enterprise Road Corridor Development Review District Commission for Prince George’s County: David L. Anderson, Christopher Golson, Daniel N. Mushala, Stephen M. Rice, Cassia N. Sookhoo, and George D. Patterson. The Council also approved the appointment of the following individuals to the Commission on Common Ownership Communities for Prince George’s County: Rafe Reginald Ellison, Joanne R. Jackson, and Cassandra C. Lewis. The Council thanks every Prince Georgian appointed to a County board or commission for their willingness to serve.

COUNCIL APPROVES LETTER TO THE STATE OPPOSING PROPOSED CHANGES FOR
BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON PARKWAY
Council Members unanimously
approved the Chair’s signature on a Council letter to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan stating
the Council’s strong opposition to the transfer of the Baltimore-Washington
Parkway from the United States Park Service, to the State of Maryland. This
correspondence reaffirms CR-24-2018,
which the Council adopted in April. The
Council also considered other legislative measures.

This was the final scheduled opportunity for public comment on these bills as part of the Council’s Committee of the Whole. HONORED FOR ITS WORK TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN THE COUNTY
Chair Dannielle Glaros accepted the “Excellence in Public Service Award,” presented to the Council by the County’s Human Relations Commission during its “Prince George’s County Human Trafficking Task Force Recognition and Awards Breakfast” held Tuesday on the campus of Bowie State University. The award recognized the Council’s significant contributions in the County’s fight against Human Trafficking, including passage of anti-trafficking legislation such as CB-80-2014, CB-81-2014, and CB-59-2016. The Human Relations Commission, under the direction of D. Michael Lyles, Esq., also honored District 7 Council Member and Human Trafficking Task Force Vice Chair Karen R. Toles with the Chairman’s Award. Council Member Toles proposed and championed CR-74-2013, legislation establishing the Prince George’s County Human Trafficking Task Force.
