County Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping

County Executive Aisha Braveboy and County leaders are taking a strong stand against illegal dumping in Prince George's County.

Illegal dumping is not just a nuisance—it carries real costs. It harms public health, reduces property values, and damages the sense of pride residents feel in their neighborhoods and their county.

This behavior will not be tolerated, and enforcement efforts are actively increasing. Those responsible will be held accountable.

If you see illegal dumping:

  • Call 911 for active dumping incidents

Celebrating National Learn About Composting Day: Connecting Residents to County Composting Operations

In recognition of National Learn About Composting Day, the Prince George's County Department of the Environment (DoE), in partnership with the Office of Community Relations (OCR), hosted a residential tour of the Prince George's County Organics Composting Facility (PGCOCF). The event provided residents with a behind-the-scenes look at one of the County's most important sustainability operations. It highlighted how their participation in the PGC Composts curbside collection program directly supports the facility's success.

Participants toured the nearly 220-acre composting facility and attended an educational session focused on the composting process—from curbside collection to the production of Leafgro®, the County's premium compost product. The tour demonstrated how everyday actions taken by residents contribute to a large-scale operation that diverts organic materials from the waste stream and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

As one of the largest municipal composting facilities in the nation, the PGCOCF processes yard trim, food scraps, and other organic materials collected through the County's composting program. Increased resident participation helps maximize the facility's environmental benefits while supporting the County's long-term waste diversion and sustainability goals.

Residents learned several practical benefits of participating in the PGC Composts program, including:

  • Reducing the amount of household waste placed in trash carts each week.
  • Conveniently disposing of food scraps and leftovers through a weekly compost collection service.
  • Reducing the need for lawn and leaf bags by placing eligible yard trim directly into compost carts.
  • Helping create valuable compost products that support landscaping, gardening, and environmental restoration efforts.

The event successfully connected residents to the operational impact of composting and reinforced the important role they play in advancing the County’s zero-waste goals. Through education and community engagement, Prince George’s County continues to promote sustainable practices that benefit both current and future generations.

A Regional Drought Watch is now in effect — every drop counts!

Simple changes at home can help conserve water and protect our shared resources.

  • Keep showers under 5 minutes
  • Turn off the water while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Run only full loads of laundry and dishes
  • Fix leaks quickly
  • Sweep sidewalks instead of using a hose
  • Consider a commercial car wash

Small actions make a big impact. Let's work together to use water wisely.  Learn more water-saving tips: www.wsscwater.com/conservation.

Drought in effect
