March is Women's History Month

Celebrate the Achievements of Women Who Work With Pets

womenshistorymonthbanner DoE

Women’s History Month celebrates the achievements and contributions of women who work with animals. From veterinarians to conservationists, women have played a crucial role in advancing animal welfare and scientific understanding. Here are three women veterinarians who changed animal medicine.

Dr. Elinor McGrath

elinor mcGrath

Widely considered one of America's first female veterinarians, Dr. Elinor McGrath was born in 1888 and became the first woman ever admitted to Chicago Veterinary College in 1907. She endured bullying and harassment from schoolmates, but persevered and graduated in 1910—a decade before U.S. women were granted the right to vote. Following graduation, Dr. McGrath ran a small-animal practice in Chicago and became known for her animal-friendly approach. During her several decades as a practicing veterinarian, Dr. McGrath also established the city's first pet cemetery, inspired by her understanding of the everlasting bond between people and their pets.

Dr. Jane Hinton

Jane Hinton

When Dr. Jane Hinton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948, she became one of the first two African American women to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Before becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Hinton worked alongside her father—Harvard University's first black professor—and invented a medium that would become known as Mueller-Hinton agar, still used to grow bacteria and test for antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Patricia O'Connor Halloran

Patricia O'Conner

Dr. Patricia O'Connor Halloran was born in 1914 and grew up in Buffalo, NY. In 1939, she graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she worked in private practice in Charleston, West Virginia. Once she was married in 1940, she and her husband, Dr. John Lewis Halloran Jr., both worked for his father's private practice, where he was paid, and she was not.

In 1942, the Staten Island Zoo hired her to work as a temporary veterinarian due to a shortage of male doctors during the war. It was here that she became the first female zoo veterinarian. However, once the war ended, she remained the chief animal caretaker, working until her zoo retirement in 1966. Following this, she ran her husband's small clinic, where she also consulted for an experimental animal colony at the US Public Health Service on Staten Island. In 1999, she fully retired in Indiana.

"Enny Meeny Miney" You should pick Mo!

Adopting Mo (A566209), a peanut butter-loving, tug-of-war champ, makes pet ownership easy. He's happy lounging on the couch while you're at work and will greet you with kisses and snuggles when you return. Mo (A566209) gently takes treats, loves tug-of-war, food puzzles, and chew toys, but never chews furniture. After tearing up a toy, he's fine with you cleaning up.

Mo (A566209) is recovering from neuter surgery and enjoying apartment life. He rides elevators calmly and ignores bikes and cars on walks. He's curious about other dogs but is easily redirected. Rain, snow, or shine, Mo (A566209) is always ready for a walk—or a car ride.

Mo's (A566209) floppy ears, kind eyes, and peaceful nature make him the perfect, easygoing companion for any dog lover.

Cita and Perez are in Foster Care

Ready for Adoption!

ASD is still seeking fosters to provide our animals with a warm, safe place to stay during the winter. We were thrilled by the incredible response amid our recent snowstorm, with several dogs and a cat finding loving foster homes! Fostering is a short-term commitment that saves lives.  If you are interested in fostering one of our shelter pets, email fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us.

Meet Cita!

cITA

Cita (A566591) is a sweet, curious brindle girl with a real zest for the world. She walks nicely on a leash but can get distracted by all the sights and smells.

Cita (A566591) may have been used for breeding, but now she's ready to be cherished. She's compact and adorable, with a beautiful brindle coat and a petite build, not the typical stocky "staffy" look.

In the yard, Cita (A566591) loves to sniff and explore. She's treat-motivated and will even tackle the obstacle course when excited. Occasionally, her energy leads her to jump or grab the leash, but she responds well to gentle correction and settles quickly.

For more information about Cita (A566591) or fostering, please email fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us.

Check out Cita (A566591) on Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/reels/DVeyULdiWjI/.

Meet Perez!

perez

Perez  (A566633) is a sweet 6-year-old Chihuahua mix with an affectionate personality. He loves being close to his people, whether cuddling on the couch, relaxing in a lap, or enjoying gentle pets.

Perez (A566633) enjoys daily walks and playtime with his favorite Lamb Chop toy. He is calm and loving, and he forms strong bonds with his caregivers. After playing, he's happiest curled up beside you.

He is house-trained and crate-trained, patiently waiting by the door when he needs to go outside. Perez (A566633) is polite, well-mannered, and would be a loyal companion in any loving home

Please consider giving this wonderful boy the forever home he deserves.

If you have room in your heart for Perez (A566633) or any of our other lovable pets, or if you're interested in becoming a foster parent, please email fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us.

 ASD’s Nibbles Nook

Pet Pantry is Saturday, April 4, 2026

Nibbles Nook will host a Pet Pantry on the first of every month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to support our community and their beloved pets. Dog and cat food will be available to county residents while supplies last.

As food scarcity continues to impact families in our County, access to pet food has never been more important. No one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets. Our pantry helps keep pets healthy, loved, and right where they belong—at home. For more information about our Nibbles Nook, visit www.princegeorgespets4us.com.

March is Pet Poison Prevention Month

Pet Poison Prevention Month, observed every March, is a dedicated time to raise awareness about the dangers of accidental pet poisoning and to educate pet owners on how to keep their furry friends safe. Many common household items—including cleaning products, certain foods, medications, and even some plants—can be toxic to pets if ingested. The month serves as a reminder for pet owners to review what substances are accessible to their pets and to make necessary changes to their homes to prevent accidental exposure.

During Pet Poison Prevention Month, veterinarians, animal welfare organizations, and pet advocacy groups share valuable information on recognizing the signs of poisoning and what immediate steps to take if an incident occurs. Symptoms of poisoning in pets can range from vomiting and drooling to lethargy, seizures, or more severe reactions. By spreading knowledge and encouraging preventive measures, Pet Poison Prevention Month helps protect pets from harm and ensures they continue to live happy, healthy lives.

Visit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for more information about pet poison control - https://www.aspcapro.org/apccgraphics.

ASD Reminds Everyone to Microchip and Register Their Pets

Help keep your pets safe by ensuring they are microchipped! Microchips are tiny transponders implanted under your pet's skin between the shoulder blades and serve as a permanent form of identification.

If your pet loses its collar and tag, a microchip dramatically increases the chances of being reunited. When found, veterinary clinics or animal shelters will scan for a microchip and contact the company the chip is registered with to retrieve your contact information. Pets with microchips are much more likely to be safely returned home!

After your pet is microchipped, register the chip by contacting the microchip company and providing your current contact information.

Remember to update your contact information whenever it changes!

If your pet goes missing, file a LOST report at www.24petconnect.com.

If you find a stray animal, file a FOUND report at www.24petconnect.com.
