Prince George's County Allows Legal Ownership and Adoption of Pit Bull–Terriers under a New Law
Prince George's County now allows Pit Bull–type terriers to be legally owned and adopted following the passage of County Bill CB-097-2025, provided all registration and ownership requirements are met.
Under the new law, individuals who own or wish to adopt Pit Bull–type terriers must comply with specific County requirements designed to promote responsible pet ownership and public safety. These requirements include registration with the County, obtaining the appropriate County license and permit, and completing mandatory training.

Keep Pets Safe in Winter Weather
Winter is here - please make sure you protect your pets. Exposure to extreme winter weather can harm our pets if we leave them outside for prolonged periods. Prince George's County law states that "all domestic animals, except livestock, are prohibited from being kept outdoors when the effective outdoor wind chill index is 32 degrees Fahrenheit." For their own safety, ensure your four-legged family members are kept warm and their paws are clear, and report animal cruelty incidents to 301-780-7200.
If left unattended outdoors, pets can suffer from frostbite or become disorientated and freeze to death. Hypothermia can result from extended exposure to cold and is a life-threatening condition.
If there are outdoor cats in your area, please bang loudly on your car hood before starting the engine. This will give them a chance to escape. Cats like to seek shelter from the cold and can be under the hood of your car.
Please report any instances of animal cruelty to 301-780-7200.
For more information, visit Cold Weather Pet Hazards | Prince George's County.

Eleven, Serenity, and Chunk Are in Foster Care
Ready for Adoption!
ASD is still seeking out fosters to provide our animals with a warm, safe place to stay during the winter. We were thrilled by the incredible response amid our recent snowstorm—several dogs and a cat found loving foster homes! These amazing fosters have sent in updates on how everyone is settling in. Here is what they had to say about Eleven, Serenity, and Chunk!
Meet Eleven!
Eleven (A566233), is a true fashionista who has been basking in the affection of her weekend foster!
Here's what her foster has to say: "She's been wonderful, very sweet, affectionate, and loving. Gentle and food-motivated, she knows no personal space; she'll crawl into your lap, lean against you, and shower you with kisses. She walks well on a leash and prefers to stay close. Eleven is beginning to build confidence and is both curious and somewhat hesitant in new surroundings. She also appears to be house-trained."
Does Eleven (A566233) sound like your perfect number? Reach out to us at adoptpgcpets@co.pg.md.us to learn more.

Meet Serenity!
Serenity (A565882) has been thriving in the comfort of her foster home during this snowy, cold season.
Here's what her foster family has to share: "She has settled into our home beautifully and quickly became part of the family. Serenity (A565882) is a sweetheart with a delightfully goofy personality. She already knows “sit” and “down,” and her love of treats makes her highly trainable. She is fully housebroken and patiently waits by the door to let you know when she needs to go out.
Serenity (A565882) is extremely playful. Her current favorite toy is a squeaky stuffed pizza slice, and she also loves to snuggle on the couch and watch TV with you. Yes, she genuinely watches TV—her favorite shows so far are Secret Life of Pets and Finding Nemo.
She goes into her kennel without any fuss for meals or when we’re out of the house, making her an easygoing and adaptable companion."

Meet Chunk!
Chunk’s (A563976) gentle demeanor and talent for making friends with everyone he meets make him the ideal companion. Whether he's napping peacefully or strolling through the park, Chunk (A563976) embodies the joy and loyalty that Labradors are celebrated for.
If you have room in your heart for Chunk (A563976) or any of our other lovable pets, or if you're interested in becoming a foster parent, please email fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us.

ASD’s Nibbles Nook
Pet Pantry Announcement
Nibbles Nook will host a Pet Pantry on the first of every month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to support our community and their beloved pets. Dog and cat food will be available to county residents while supplies last.
As food scarcity continues to impact families in our county, access to pet food has never been more important. No one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets. Our pantry helps keep pets healthy, loved, and right where they belong—at home. For more information about our Nibbles Nook, visit www.princegeorgespets4us.com.

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful chance to show love not just to people, but also to the pets that bring so much joy and companionship into our lives. While we often think of flowers and chocolates as classic gifts, pets have their own unique needs and preferences. Thoughtful gifts like new toys, cozy beds, or special treats made specifically for cats or dogs can make your furry friends feel extra loved on this special day. Even spending quality time together—like an extra walk or extended play session—can be a meaningful way to celebrate the bond you share.
One important thing to remember is that while chocolate is a favorite treat for humans on Valentine’s Day, it is dangerous and potentially deadly for pets. Chocolate contains substances that are toxic to dogs and cats, even in small amounts. Instead, consider gifting your pets safe, pet-friendly treats or a fun new accessory. A little creativity goes a long way in making Valentine’s Day safe and enjoyable for every member of the family, both two-legged and four-legged.For more ideas and information, visit www.aspcapet-friendly-valentines-day

ASD Reminds Everyone to Microchip and Register Their Pets
Help keep your pets safe by ensuring they are microchipped! Microchips are tiny transponders implanted under your pet's skin between the shoulder blades and serve as a permanent form of identification.
If your pet loses its collar and tag, a microchip dramatically increases the chances of being reunited. When found, veterinary clinics or animal shelters will scan for a microchip and contact the company the chip is registered with to retrieve your contact information. Pets with microchips are much more likely to be safely returned home!
After your pet is microchipped, register the chip by contacting the microchip company and providing your current contact information.
Remember to update your contact information whenever it changes!
If your pet goes missing, file a LOST report at www.24petconnect.com.
If you find a stray animal, file a FOUND report at www.24petconnect.com.
