It's Hot Outside - Keep Your Pets Safe!

Dog drinking water

Hot weather safety is important for us all and is especially crucial to prevent heat-related illnesses and fatalities of our beloved pets. Animals are more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration. Read hot weather safety tips for pets.

The Prince George’s County Animal Control Ordinance Section 3-180, titled "Animal Cruelty and Neglect," says all domestic animals except livestock are prohibited from being kept outdoors when the heat index is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, as determined by the National Weather Service.

To report an animal experiencing neglect or cruelty in Prince George's County, contact the Animal Services Division at 301-780-7200, and select “1” for animal-related emergencies.

For more information on how to keep your pet healthy and safe in weather conditions, visit Seasonal Pet Care.

Keep Your Cats Cool This Summer!

Cats also can be affected by the heat during the hot summer months. Daily Paws lists eight important tips to keep your cats cool and healthy. Those tips include:

Swap the water bowl for a fountain.

Get a cooling mat.

Provide airflow.

Apply cool water to their paws.

Give an experienced bather a cool bath.

Create a cool space for outside cats.

For more information, visit Daily Paws cat safety tips.

ASD Updates: Thank You, Union Church!

thank you Union Church

Thank you to Union Church for volunteering with us this past Saturday!

Because of their amazing group, we were able to create enrichment items for our entire dog population—every single pup received something to brighten their day!

We are so grateful for your time, creativity, and commitment to helping our shelter animals thrive. For more information about our volunteer programs, visit www.princegeorgescountypets4us.com.

Scoop That Poop!

Dog waste is more than a nightmare for our shoes. Just like human sewage, untreated pet fecal matter is harmful to waterways. Rain washes dog waste and the associated disease-causing organisms, such as giardia and salmonella, into rivers, beaches, and bays via storm drains.

Enough bacteria can make water unsafe for drinking and swimming and also contribute to shellfish bed closures. Pet waste left anywhere is a potential public health risk. Pet waste on playing fields, sidewalks, or parks can be unhealthy and messy.

Even at home, responsible pet owners should throw pet waste in the trash or flush it down the toilet to prevent water pollution associated with bacteria-laden waste. Less dog waste in the watershed means a happier and healthier community for all.

The management of pet waste is an important issue for the people and environment of Prince George’s County. For more information, visit www.pgcscoopthatpoop.
