Prince George's County Joins WMATA in Launch of Better Bus Network Redesign - Service Changes and Free Fares Currently Underway
As part of the County's Transit Vision Plan, the Better Bus Network Redesign aims to create a more efficient and user-friendly transit system in Prince George's County. The initiative, in collaboration with WMATA, will expand transit services in the County by 30% over the next five years. As part of the effort, TheBus has joined Metro in renaming all its bus routes. Both TheBus and Metrobus routes will now follow a consistent naming convention that includes a three-character code, with routes primarily operating in Prince George's County beginning with a "P" for Prince George’s.
Operational improvements will include the addition of new bus shelters, optimizing existing routes, and enhancing the overall rider experience. The average frequency of TheBus routes will be increased, reducing wait times for riders and improving on-time performance for operators. And for the first time, TheBus will serve customers in Bowie, Fairwood, Adelphi, Friendly, and Fort Washington, which will enhance access to medical facilities such as the Bowie Fairwood Medical Center and the Fort Washington Medical Center. These operational changes will address the lack of transportation options within the County, fostering a more equitable environment for all residents.
'Free Fare' Initiative Advances Equitable and Accessible Transit for Residents of Prince George's County
As part of the Better Bus Network Redesign (BBNR), the Prince George's County Department of Public Works and Transportation has launched the historic 'Free Fare' initiative. This program allows riders to use public transportation at no cost on: TheBus, PGC Link, and Call-A-Bus. By eliminating fares, Prince George's County moves one step closer to creating equitable access for both residents and visitors.
In addition to offering free rides, new bus shelters are being installed throughout the County to enhance safety, comfort, and access for transit riders. “These upgrades—more bus shelters and no fares—show our commitment to a public transit system that serves everyone,” said Michael Johnson, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation. “We’re building a network that meets the needs of today and tomorrow.”
DPW&T Supports Pride Month in Prince George's County!
June is recognized as National Pride Month, a time to reflect on and support individuals who identify as part of the LGBT+ community. The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) collaborated with several partners to commemorate this month, including the City of Hyattsville, Council Member Wanika Fisher, and the Prince George's County Police Department.
DPW&T incorporated the theme of Pride Month in several ways, fostering solidarity within the community and providing educational opportunities. These initiatives aimed to inform the public about upcoming changes that will affect commuters, such as the Better Bus Network Redesign (BBNR), and to help residents stay informed and connected with the agency.
