PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY CONTINUES PROGRESS WITH PHASE TWO OF RESIDENTIAL STREET SWEEPING PROGRAM

Countywide Operations Currently Underway – Over 600 Thousand Pounds of Debris Collected

LARGO, MD – The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is pleased to announce that Phase II of the County’s Residential Street Sweeping Program is currently underway. The program, launched as a pilot in fall 2024, is part of a countywide effort to improve neighborhood cleanliness, enhance stormwater maintenance, and support a healthier environment.

The Residential Street Sweeping Program aligns with Prince George’s County’s overall litter reduction and beautification efforts. Regular street sweeping of curb lines helps prevent litter buildup, mitigates pollutants in our ecosystem, and enhances the overall appearance of residential neighborhoods.

“DPW&T listened to what residents shared with us during the program’s first phase and we are proud of the progress made so far,” said Department of Public Works and Transportation Director, Michael Johnson. “Our team worked diligently to make improvements based on our Phase I experience, and we’re seeing the results in smoother operations and positive feedback from the field.”

Phase II of residential street sweeping operations began in April and, to date, has completed sweeping of 2,337 streets, covering 1,147 curb miles, and collected more than 600 thousand pounds (300 tons) of debris. More than 1 million pounds of debris was collected during Phase I.

Under the program, Prince George’s County acquired state-of-the-art regenerative air sweepers, designed to be more effective than broom or vacuum sweepers. These advanced sweepers collect debris and smaller materials, including residual roadway salt, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which can contribute to environmental degradation if left untreated. Nitrogen and phosphorus found in curbside litter threaten the County’s water integrity and worsen the quality of the Potomac, Chesapeake Bay, and other bodies of water.

Phase II includes 24 Sweeping Zones and is currently active in Zones 6 through 10. Service will continue in the remaining Zones throughout the summer and early fall. Residents are encouraged to monitor local notices, follow posted signage, and temporarily locate vehicles during scheduled sweeping days to ensure thorough service. Residential street sweeping is a penalty-free cleanup effort. Cars along the curbline on street sweeping days will not be ticketed or towed; however, streets occupied by vehicles cannot be swept.
