Without your IMMEDIATE help, we face the heart-wrenching possibility of finding alternative solutions for healthy, adoptable dogs awaiting their best friend.

Our Animal Services Facility is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, Tue – Fri; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (please arrive one hour prior to closing), and is ready to help you find and adopt. For more information and to see pets ready to be adopted, visit www.princegeorgespets4us.com.

ASD NEEDS Student Volunteers!!

ASD is looking for student volunteers! Do you need something for your teen to do during Spring/Summer Break? Is your teen an animal lover interested in learning more about Animal Welfare?

Having students volunteering at ASD benefits our animals, staff, and students. Students will be able to complete their community service hours required for school. Also, having students aged 14-17 come in to volunteer will help them create and develop a work ethic they can use when hired for their first jobs. Those who are interested in entering the animal welfare job field will be able to network and socialize with individuals with the same interests as them. Volunteering with us will expose students to various career paths in the animal welfare industry. If you have a student interested in volunteering at ASD, please email ASDVOLUNTEER@CO.PG.MD.US.

Be Sure to Microchip Your Pets

Keep your furry friends safe by ensuring they are microchipped. Microchips are small transponders implanted under your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. They provide an extra form of identification if your pet loses their collar and tag while missing. If your pet ends up at a veterinary clinic or an animal shelter, staff will scan your pet for a microchip and contact the brand the chip is registered under to get your contact information. Pets with microchips are more likely to be returned to their owners!

If your pet goes missing, fill out a LOST report at

www.24petconnect.com

If you have found a stay animal, fill out a FOUND report at

Follow the 3/3/3 Adjustment Rule

When Adopting a Dog

According to the Animal Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) the 3 days - 3 weeks - 3 months guideline is important because it provides realistic expectations for both pets and owners. It also emphasizes the need for patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. New routines, habits, and trust take time to develop which means animals need time to adjust to their new environments.

The 3-3-3 guideline for pet adoption is a phased adjustment period to help with the decompression and adjustment during a pet’s transition into a new home.   For more information, visit www.aspcapro.org/resource/pet-adjustment-periods-3-days-3-weeks-3-months-guide.

Adoption Update

Heartwarming Pupdates!

You might remember when sweet senior Jackle found her forever home with one of our amazing volunteers, settling into her golden years on a beautiful horse farm. Jackle (now Millie) thought life could be even sweeter with a senior gal pal to share it with—so a few weeks ago, she welcomed her new sister, Strafa (now Gladys)!

Strafa was not at the shelter long before being adopted. She spent most of her time in the quiet room. She came in as a stray, with several scars that suggested she lived a rough life. But despite her past, Gladys could not be sweeter.

Millie and Gladys are living their best lives—gossiping, sunbathing, and washing up all the love their wonderful family and farm friends have to offer. Happy days ahead for these two lovely ladies!

ASD wants to thank these senior girls' adopters for taking in not one but TWO golden gals and giving them such an excellent chance at life. We have many more senior pets at ASD; you can view them by going to 24petconnect.com/PGEOADOPT.

  • Speedy (A556645) and Calmy (A556646) are two 10-year-old turtles who were surrendered after their caretaker passed away. They are social and looking for a home where they can have a clean tank and lots of turtle food!
  • Clover (A556731), a five-month-old bearded dragon that came from an eviction, her hold time is up, and she is now ready for her home !

DeMatha Catholic High School Basketball Teams for Visiting Our Adoptable Pets!

DeMatha Catholic High School is a powerhouse in boys' sports here in the DMV. So when some junior varsity and varsity basketball players, team manager, coaches, and players’ parents took time out of their busy schedules to spend time with our adoptable animals, we were truly honored.

The team got an adoption room tour, met some of our excellent adoptable pets, and even took part in a fun photoshoot with them. It's safe to say that both the animals and the guys had a blast!

Congratulations to Krishna Ransom, DeMatha varsity basketball team manager and dedicated Eagle Scout, for making it all happen!  Krishna  organized this visit as part of a fundraising effort to benefit the homeless animals in our care.

Thank you also to Krishna, the DeMatha basketball players, their parents, and everyone who supports our shelter animals. Your compassion and generosity make all the difference!

MEET NICK!

Meet Nick (A555977)! He is a two-year-old brown German Shepherd mix that came in as a stray and is now ready for a forever home. (pictured with DeMatha High School  team).

Urgent Need for Kuranda Beds
Consider Donating Now!

Due to our high volume of intakes, we are having a shortage of Kuranda beds and we are asking our community to Show Some Love and donate a Kuranda bed. We are also looking for NEW bedding or towels and toys for their merriment (cat toys, Kongs, Nylabones, frisbees).

As part of enrichment programs, we are looking for shelter-approved toys that help keep animals entertained and occupied with mental stimulation while at the shelter. This can help their true personalities shine through despite being stressed. For recommendations on donations, visit our enrichment item wishlist here.

Our kennel still needs donated items such as new bedding, cleaning supplies, and foster items such as scales or kitten milk. Please see the kennel supply wishlist here.

We are not currently accepting used bedding, pillows, stuffed animals, plush toys, or items with stuffing.

In addition, ASD is strongly encouraging donations of Kuranda beds of all sizes for our doggie friends. There are lots of benefits for pets sleeping on Kuranda Beds, including:

  • Kuranda beds are the superior choice in shelters and rescues due to their durability and the added protection of a one-year Chew Proof Warranty.
  • Shelters prefer Kuranda beds since they are easy to clean and sanitize, minimizing the spread of infectious diseases.
  • The elevated sleep surface helps regulate body temperature in warmer and cooler months.
  • The orthopedic design alleviates pressure points on joints.
  • Quality sleep reduces stress, which keeps animals healthy and feeling good while they await their forever homes.

Check out shelterbeds.org/donate/22654 for more information on how to donate.
