Weathering the Winter Storms: From Setbacks to Solutions
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for maintaining more than 2,000 miles of roads in Prince George’s County, even during harsh winter weather. This winter, more snow fell in the County than we have seen in nearly a decade. The season was challenging for residents and tested DPW&T Snow Operations in unexpected ways.
Following the first snowstorm of the year, several neighborhoods experienced service delays, with some residential streets left untreated for longer than expected. Recognizing the need for swift action, DPW&T took immediate steps to correct inefficiencies and identify areas for improvement, which were presented during a briefing with the County Council. DPW&T also shared several short-term actions, as well as mid-term and long-term strategies during the briefing, which will be implemented over time to further refine the snow plan.
When the next major snow event reached Prince George’s County in February, the difference was clear. DPW&T teams responded faster, and residential streets were cleared in a more timely manner. What began as a snow season filled with challenges, ended with a successful response, demonstrating the department’s ability to listen, learn, adapt, and improve.
“Great job by Prince George’s County. Success is measured in how many times you get up, not how many times you fall; the County got up!” – County Resident 2/15/2025
While no winter storm is ever easy, DPW&T remains committed to continuous improvement, ensuring that our residents receive “Service That Makes a Difference” when they need it most.
Get Ready to Blossom: Growing Green With Pride Spring 2025 is Almost Here!
The bi-annual countywide cleanup Growing Green With Pride is returning! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 26th, from 8 AM to 12 PM. The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) invites County residents, community groups, faith-based organizations, schools, neighbors, and friends to participate in this highly anticipated initiative. Together, we can help rid our communities of debris and litter.
For those who may not know, Prince George’s County is one of the most densely populated areas in Maryland and the second-largest County, with nearly 1 million residents. Our goal is to clean up as many neighborhoods as possible, but we need your help! Registration will open in mid-March, and we encourage everyone to sign up and spread the word. This year, our goal is 10,000 participants! While this number represents only about one percent of the County, the impact we can make together will be significant. Can we count on you to join us in making a difference and beautifying our county?

Residential Street Sweeping is Making its Return!
For the first time in more than 30 years, Prince George's County residents witnessed the removal of debris, muck, and grime from the roadways right outside their homes. The Residential Street Sweeping Program began with Phase I in summer 2024, piloting in specific areas of the County to evaluate operational efficiencies, gather resident feedback, and collect data to support the larger countywide rollout scheduled for spring 2025.
The Residential Street Sweeping Program is more than just a cleaning effort; it’s a commitment to enhance our community’s well-being. By removing accumulated debris and toxins from our roads, we’re not just making our streets look better—we're safeguarding our environment and boosting roadway safety. Pollutants that linger on our streets can seep into storm drains and eventually flow into the Potomac and other local waterways. By sweeping these pollutants, we’re protecting the water quality and ecosystems that thrive in them. This initiative is a testament to our County’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Additionally, keeping our streets clear helps reduce the chances of roadway incidents by eliminating obstacles and road impediments. Together, we’re not just cleaning our neighborhoods; we’re fostering a healthier, safer, and more vibrant Prince George's County for all!
