Department of Public Works and Transportation Mobilizes Full Snow Operations Ahead of Forecasted Snowfall
LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) will mobilize full operations in response to snowfall expected to impact the region beginning Sunday, January 19, 2025.
AccuWeather predicts snow will arrive in the area early Sunday, followed by snowfall throughout the day. DPW&T will run a Full Snow Operation beginning Sunday morning at 4:00 a.m., deploying salt trucks, snowplows, and other necessary equipment, adjusting as needed to maintain clear and passable roadways.
Salting of hills and cold spots will begin on Saturday, January 18. On Sunday, January 19, salting of residential areas will begin at 4:00 a.m. followed by primary and secondary roads. When snow accumulations reach the required levels, plowing operations will proceed.
“Snow operations during our last storm did not meet residents’ expectations or the high standards we strive to maintain as a department,” said DPW&T Director Michael Johnson. “We have implemented adjustments to strengthen our response and these improvements have prepared us for a better response during this round of winter weather.”
Route Prioritization Adjustments
DPW&T will pre-treat critical areas such as hills, cold spots, and residential roads to ensure safer conditions before snow begins to accumulate. Primary and secondary streets will still be plowed first to maintain public safety and ensure emergency vehicles are able to travel safely. Once these routes are cleared, crews will focus on residential streets to ensure neighborhood access.
What Residents Can Do
- Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
- Park in driveways or other off-road locations whenever possible to ensure accessibility for snowplows.
- Residents may visit PGC Track Snow to view snowplow progress in their area. The platform has been updated and technical issues have been resolved.
