Snow and Trash Update
Dear Prince Georgians:
We have heard your concerns about the road conditions in our County following the recent snowfall and we want to assure you that we understand your frustrations. We recognize that our response to this recent weather event did not meet your expectations and I want to take this opportunity to express that it did not meet my expectations as your Acting County Executive.
We had challenges in certain areas throughout the County, and we are working diligently to address them. The delay in treating residential roads is due to the prioritization of primary and secondary roads. Additionally, freezing temperatures have significantly impacted the effectiveness of our Department of Public Works and Transportation’s (DPW&T) salt application. As a result, yesterday, DPW&T introduced a new chemical to help with the breakdown of ice on the roads and we are hoping that residents will begin to see a significant difference on our roads. DPW&T also continues to focus on residential streets to ensure access and is reviewing the plowing strategy to determine if there is a more effective way for us to reach our residential areas.
We would also like to emphasize that the County has not run out of our salt supply. DPW&T began this snow season with approximately 43,500 tons of salt on hand, utilizing approximately 6,000 during this operation. We want to ensure our residents that salt is being applied efficiently and responsibly as a part of our ongoing snow removal efforts and that DPW&T is fully equipped to maintain ongoing salt brining operations, with ample supply available for future operations.
As we prepare for another round of winter weather this weekend, we want to remind residents of the importance of keeping streets clear to allow access for snowplows. To help with snow removal efforts, please park your vehicles in your driveway, if possible, or as close to the curb as you can. This will allow plows to effectively navigate the streets and clear snow in a timely manner. In addition, please ensure that there are no objects in the street that can potentially block access for plows and delay our snow removal efforts.
We remain committed to addressing your concerns as we work diligently to treat our roadways. We encourage you to learn more about our snow removal efforts from DPW&T Director Michael Johnson here.
Tara H. Jackson Acting Prince George’s County Executive
TRASH UPDATE
Due to weather and road-related conditions, the County suspended all residential bulky, regular trash, and recycling curbside collections. All regular waste collections continue on a sliding schedule.
The curbside waste collection schedule for this week is:
- Regular Friday, January 10 collections slide to Saturday, January 11
Residents are reminded that waste collections may experience slight delays or additional suspensions due to road or weather-related conditions within neighborhoods once collections resume. If a collection did not occur following the sliding schedule by 8:00 PM, it was due to weather or road-related conditions and collections will be made next week on your regular collection day. In addition, pickups can occur anytime from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM on collection day.
Learn more information about waste collection services during inclement weather on our Department of the Environment website here.
