Prince George’s County Prepares for First Snowstorm of the 2025 Winter Season

Department of Public Works and Transportation Mobilizes Full Snow Operations Ahead of Forecasted Snowstorm

Largo, MD – The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) will mobilize full operations for a snowstorm expected to impact the region beginning today, Sunday, January 5, through Monday, January 6, 2025.

AccuWeather predicts snow will arrive late today into Monday morning, followed by snowfall throughout the day. DPW&T will run a Full Snow Operation beginning this evening, deploying 230 plows, salt trucks, and other necessary equipment, adjusting as needed to maintain clear and passable roadways.

“DPW&T is committed to ensuring the safety of residents by maintaining passable roadways during and after the storm,” said DPW&T Director Michael Johnson. “We also conducted a successful Snow and Ice Dry Run and a Virtual Snow Summit to provide residents with information and resources to prepare for winter storms. Prince George’s County is ready.”

Route Prioritization During Winter Events

During snow events, routes are prioritized for service by the following categories: primary, secondary, and residential. Primary and secondary roads are serviced first to ensure public safety and emergency vehicles are able to travel safely. Once these routes are cleared, crews will focus on residential streets to ensure neighborhood access. Untreated roadways may be reported to PGC311 48 hours after precipitation has ended.

What Residents Can Do

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
  • Park in driveways or other off-road locations whenever possible to ensure accessibility for snowplows.
  • Report hazardous conditions such as downed trees or icy patches by calling PGC311.
  • Stay updated on weather forecasts and DPW&T’s operations through dpwt.mypgc.us or @PGCountyDPWT

Stay Connected and Informed

Residents can follow DPW&T on social media @PGCountyDPWT for updates on snow removal efforts, road conditions, and safety tips. Visit DPWT.MYPGC.US for additional resources and information about the Department’s winter weather response plan.

TheBus will operate as scheduled, with DPW&T monitoring route conditions and making service adjustments as needed. For real-time information, route tracking, and service alerts, residents can access PGCConnect or call 301.324.2877. Call-A-Bus and PGC Link will only provide dialysis transportation. To reschedule any canceled reservations, residents may call 301.499.8603. Residents are urged to exercise caution when accessing transit equipment and facilities, as sidewalks may be coated with snow and ice, causing slippery conditions.
