Acting County Executive Appoints Acting Chief Administrative Officer

Dear Prince Georgians:

I am excited to share that we have appointed Mr. Barry L. Stanton to serve as the County’s Acting Chief Administrative Officer (ACAO). With more than 40 years of experience, Mr. Stanton brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this role, having served in the Office of the County Executive for two administrations, including in his current role as Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (DCAO) for Public Safety and Homeland Security.

A proud Prince Georgian for over 25 years, Mr. Stanton has worked in the public safety management and organizational development for over 45 years. He began his career with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office Corrections Bureau, where he rose up the ranks from Correction Officer and Shift Commander to Coordinator of Training and Compliance/Accreditation and Director of Security. In 1991, Mr. Stanton was appointed the Corrections Bureau Chief and served in that capacity until 1997.

Mr. Stanton first joined Prince George’s County Government as the Director of the Department of Corrections in 1997, where he was responsible for overseeing a $65 million budget, managing a $30 million capital construction program, and leading strategic and organizational planning. His tenure in the department set the foundation for his continued leadership and success in the public sector.

Following his decade-long service with the Department of Corrections, Mr. Stanton went on to serve as Assistant County Manager for Frederick County for 3 years, and was appointed County Manager in 2010, becoming the first African American to hold that position. In this role, Mr. Stanton oversaw all Frederick County Government agency operations, created Frederick County’s first Office of Sustainability, and directed the creation and implementation of the County’s first strategic plan, while simultaneously serving as Acting Director of the Division of Fire & Rescue.

Before returning to Prince George’s County Government in 2021, Mr. Stanton also served as the Chief Operating Officer for Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) for 3 years. During his tenure with PGCPS, Mr. Stanton oversaw food services, security, transportation, building maintenance, custodial services, school boundaries, purchasing, and capital programs.

With his extensive experience and leadership, I am confident that our County Government will remain focused on improving the quality of life of all Prince Georgians and ensuring our County remains a great place of opportunity and growth for all.

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Stanton to this new role as Acting Chief Administrative Officer!

Yours in service,

Tara H. Jackson
