Prince George’s County Prepares for Emergency Weather Conditions with Snow and Ice Control Dry Run Exercise

LARGO, MD – Prince George’s County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) will conduct a Snow and Ice Dry Run exercise on Friday, October 25, 2024, beginning at 6:00 a.m.

During the previous winter season, DPW&T responded to limited snowfall in the County. The Department is taking proactive steps to ensure readiness in the event of a more active winter season. DPW&T staff remains committed to inspecting roadways for safety hazards or impediments, salting, plowing, and keeping residents informed with regular communication updates during snow events.

“The Dry Run is a critical exercise to test operational procedures before winter weather arrives,” said DPW&T Director Michael Johnson. “The process will ensure snow removal crews and supporting personnel are prepared to tackle winter weather and keep roads safe for residents.”

Over 350 DPW&T employees, including engineers, administrative staff, project coordinators, bus drivers, and crews from other County Government agencies will work together on snow and ice operations. These personnel will assume various roles, including snowplow drivers, safety inspectors, supply monitors, and customer service representatives.

During the Dry Run exercise, drivers will familiarize themselves with assigned routes, time their runs, and identify hazardous road conditions. DPW&T will also conduct safety inspections on all vehicles and assess operational procedures and communication systems to identify areas for improvement.
