Prince George's Proud:
An Update From County Executive Alsobrooks

Dear Prince Georgians:

We recently had the pleasure of attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fairwood Elementary School in Bowie. This marks the second groundbreaking under Phase 2 of our innovative Alternative Construction Finance (ACF) program, a public-private partnership that allows us to build new, state-of-the-art schools quicky and at a cost savings for the County. Last year, we opened 6 new schools under Phase 1 of the program. Phase 2 will deliver an additional 8 new schools.

The community of Fairwood in Prince George's County has long been a vibrant and growing neighborhood, home to many families eager to see their children thrive locally. A pledge to build a school was made to them years ago, and was a key part of what attracted many families to this community. Unfortunately, that promise went unfulfilled for a long time and for years, these residents advocated tirelessly to get the school their community needed.

Their experience is why I vowed, if elected County Executive, to do everything I could to keep this promise that was made to Fairwood decades ago. This story was one of the experiences I carried with me when we went to Annapolis in 2019 to push for the ACF program, an innovative plan that had never been done anywhere before. We knew that it was long past time to deliver for Fairwood families.

That’s why I was especially pleased to stand with the residents on Fairwood to break ground on this long overdue facility. The new Fairwood Elementary School building will have more than enough space to solve overcrowding issues, and will be a sustainable, high-performance learning environment that enhances the surrounding community. We remain grateful for the Fairwood community and the residents ongoing advocacy. We join them in their commitment to providing our young people the very best resources.

We would also like to take this opportunity to highlight October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Now in our third year, we are continuing to raise awareness on the impacts of breast cancer through our Prince George’s Goes Pink initiative. The Prince George’s Goes Pink initiative works to raise awareness for early detection of breast cancer symptoms, and treatment. It also educates our community on the programs and resources that are available to those impacted.

This year’s Prince George’s Goes Pink initiative features several education, prevention, and awareness events and activities events throughout the month of October. We are Prince George’s Proud to do our part to fight breast cancer in our community, and we encourage all Prince Georgians to join us throughout the month as Prince George’s Goes Pink. For more information about our efforts, including a complete list of events, visit our website here.

Yours in Service,

Angela Alsobrooks
