Prince George's County Highlights Successful Legislative Session at the Maryland General Assembly: Secures Wins for County During Difficult Fiscal Year

Dear Prince Georgians:

I am delighted to report that we have had another successful legislative session at the Maryland General Assembly. Because of budget shortfalls, the 2024 General Assembly was perhaps the most difficult one our administration has faced. Despite the circumstances, our coalition of lawmakers and advocates were extremely successful.

I have made it a priority each session to proactively meet with and talk with the members of our delegation. Through this collaborative approach, we have funded new priorities that, a short time ago, our County could not even imagine. This year, the State budget was extremely tight. Our lawmakers and the Governor were forced to make decisions about what would receive funding and what would not.

Even in this challenging climate, our coalition built on our success in previous sessions. We succeeded in securing funding for many new projects. Through advocacy, we established that the priorities of Prince George’s County are the priorities of the State of Maryland.

I am extremely pleased that we have delivered for Prince George’s County and Maryland. Governor Moore was an excellent partner to the County from the beginning of the session, as were so many of our delegation’s leaders, including Chairs Nicole Williams and Mike Jackson, Chair Ben Barnes, President Pro Tem Malcolm Augustine, Majority Whip Jazz Lewis, and the entire Prince George’s County Delegation.

This year, we have secured a set of legislative wins that help promote health equity and protect our community from climate change. We also secured funding to expand opportunities for small businesses and continue our track record of investment along the Blue Line Corridor. These investments improve quality of life for our residents and create tremendous economic opportunity across our State.

Investments in Health and Climate Equity

We secured $10 million for a new hospital to meet the needs of southern Prince George’s County and the Beltway region. This new Adventist Health hospital will improve outcomes and care for our residents.

We secured $19 million for the Luminis Health Women’s Health Tower with the support of Governor Moore as well as $1.4 million to modernize the Luminis Health Emergency Department. This new OB/GYN wing will have surgical capabilities, maternity beds, and women’s and children’s services. This important funding will benefit women across our region by increasing our capacity to provide care.

In addition, we received $1 million for the Medstar Southern Maryland ICU bed expansion, which will help construct a 30-bed critical care tower, $2.5 million to expand the Capital Region Ella medical office building, and $1.5 million for the CCI Health Services facility expansion. This is all in addition to another $2.9 million we received for the Greater Baden medical clinic. Taken together, these investments from the State help promote healing and improve our bed capacity county- and state-wide.

Finally, we secured $10.4 million for the Calvert Hills stormwater project, which will reduce flood frequency through improvements and upgrades to storm drain systems. This drainage infrastructure will be a major improvement for College Park and Calvert Hills.

Economic and Social Investments

In addition to these transformative healthcare and climate investments, we also made headway securing greater economic opportunity. I am so pleased that we were able to show lawmakers how economic investments in our community, the jobs engine of Maryland, create a tremendous benefit for the State.

We secured $100 million from the State of Maryland for the new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt. This funding is in addition to federal funding that will help with construction of the new site. The FBI will be a generational economic boom not just to Prince George’s County, but to all of Maryland.

We received $16.9 million for Capitol Heights Metro upgrades. This funding will help pay for infrastructure improvements at the station. As with other metro stations, we are working hard to increase transit-oriented development around Capitol Heights.

We also secured $16.8 million for the Blue Line Corridor Pavilion at Lottsford. This funding will help complete the vision of a redeveloped Blue Line and will catalyze new projects along the Corridor, specifically in Downtown Largo. Our County has worked hard alongside WMATA to anticipate development of several parcels between the Metro and the government civic center.

With the support of the Governor, we secured an additional $7.5 million for the Cheverly Hospital Redevelopment project, which creates an incredible opportunity in Cheverly. This funding will help us deliver $1 billion of new investments in this extremely valuable site that serves as the gateway to all of Maryland. In addition, Governor Moore also helped us to secure $5 million for a new film studio and soundstage renovation inside the Capital Beltway.

Along with these major investments, we were also able to secure $3.1 million to help revitalize the Rosecroft Raceway, and $250,000 for Liberty Sports Park.

In total, this represents $198.3 million in new funding for priority projects in Prince George’s County. I am pleased that our vision for the State aligned well with what Governor Moore and leaders at the State House saw as our top priorities during a difficult budget year. Together, we have made investments that improve our whole community.

Yours in service,

Angela Alsobrooks
