Transit Equity Day 2024
To commemorate Transit Equity Day, the Office of Transportation produced “The Pathway to Progress,” a short film celebrating the contributions of Rosa Parks and the equity centric efforts of Prince George’s County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation. The Office of Transportation also hosted various pop-up events for transit operators and commuters alike. At the pop-up event with transit operators, an interactive Black History Transit Jeopardy game was played amongst community members. Transit operators had the opportunity to test their knowledge and each participant received RideSmart giveaways.
During the Community Engagement Day, the Transit Equity Day team rode Route 21 of TheBus alongside commuters to experience the day-to-day operations from the perspective of everyday riders. Many commuters provided positive feedback on the efficiency and convenience of our major routes. Additionally, resources and promotional items were shared during this effort.
DPW&T and Employ Prince George's Join Forces to Advance The County's Transit Vision Plan
The Office of Transportation began the second phase of outreach for the Transit Vision plan. DPW&T participated in three events in the Southern and Central regional districts of the County, reaching 145 community members within a week’s span! The first meeting was held virtually with the South County Community Roundtable. DPW&T presented our Transit Vision Plan (TVP) and shared information about our transit services that include—TheBus, Paratransit, and Microtransit. Community members were very pleased with the presentation and excited about the improvements to come with our transit services.
Additionally, DPW&T also partnered with Employ Prince George’s earlier this month to promote our Transit Vision Plan. This event was held at at the Glenarden Community Center and offered employment services and other resources to the public. DPW&T was able to provide tools for success with our TVP notepads, pens, and tote bags, which allowed the agency to connect with riders who use County transit for daily commuting. We have received great feedback on our Route 23, including from one proud resident who loves the route and stated “it's very accessible.” Some community members inquired about services available for seniors, in which DPW&T provided information about our Call-A-Bus services, along with upcoming changes from our Transit Vision Plan. Overall, this was a successful partnered event that incorporated community stakeholders and County agencies.
PGC311 Service Requests Reduce as Tree Trimming Team Achieves Remarkable Progress in Their Work
The Office of Highway Maintenance has significantly advanced in their endeavors to remove trees, tree stumps, and dead tree limbs. This progress is often a result of trees falling due to inclement weather or stormy conditions. The collaboration between DPW&T and reliable vendors has been instrumental in expanding the capacity to evaluate tree health and to provide appropriate treatment. We encourage community members to continue reporting down trees to help keep our County roadways safe for motorists and pedestrians.
