The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) executed two comprehensive Snow and Ice Operations to address recent snowstorms. DPW&T joyfully welcomed County Executive Angela Alsobrooks back to one of our Command Centers, where she expressed heartfelt thanks and appreciation to our hardworking crews and teams for their dedication during the storm. She brightened everyone's day with coffee, donuts, and uplifting words of encouragement as DPW&T continued to forge ahead, ensuring the completion of the week-long snow operations.
DPW&T operational teams worked tirelessly in three 12-hour shifts, involving the coordinated efforts of over 580 County employees and contractors. In anticipation of the week-long snowfall, contractors conducted a pretreatment salt brining operation on County roadways the night before the initial snowfall. Notably, this marks the first significant snow event for Prince George’s County since January 2022.
The Department collaborated seamlessly in weather operations, leveraging their collective expertise to enhance road safety and transportation for Prince Georgians. These efforts encompassed critical tasks such as sustaining essential medical transportation, salting roads, snow plowing, and effectively communicating service changes to County residents.

As the winter weather season continues, the Office of Transportation is prepared to gear up for snow operations to ensure the safety and functionality of our community. Despite the challenges posed by the back-to-back snow events in January, the dedicated OT team was out in full force, working relentlessly to ensure efficient operations. During the storm events, the Call-A-Bus team successfully served 300 trips to provide transportation to patients for their dialysis appointments. In addition, TheBus performed a Level 2 operation, where routes primarily ran on main roadways. The safety and well-being of the commuters in Prince George's County is our top priority and DPW&T is excited for the potential collaborative snow operations ahead in 2024.

DPW&T was able to utilize our new fleet of heavy equipment for our Full Snow and Ice Operations during January's winter weather events. The brand new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 pick-up trucks, equipped with snow plows and light packages, were able to safely remove snow from our roadways. The light packages provided better visibility for our drivers navigating through different parts of the County's five snow districts. A total of 350 trucks mobilized to treat and plow 2,000 miles of icy and snow-covered roadways including major and residential roadways.
