Prince George’s County Launch Sandbag Program to Help Protect Residents with Flooding
Residents Will be Provided Sandbags to Protect Homes During Severe Weather Events

LARGO, MD – Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) announced today that the County is launching a Sandbag Program. As the rainy season in Maryland quickly approaches, the County will provide sandbags to residents to help protect residential structures within low-lying areas of the County during heavy periods of rain.

“As we continue to experience more intense weather patterns due to climate change, like hundred-year floods taking place every two years, we are working to protect residents in the short and long-term,” said County Executive Alsobrooks. “With this program, we will be able to help provide increased protection to our residents who live within our County’s low-lying areas before the seasonal rains begin. The program complements our long-term efforts to combat flooding and climate change through historic investments in stormwater management.”

The Sandbag Program is being coordinated by the County’s Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) and Office of Homeland Security. Under the program, Prince George’s County residents will receive four sandbags, free of charge, on a one-time basis. Residents who live in unincorporated areas of the County will be able to pick up sandbags on Saturday, June 10, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at one of three distribution locations across the County. In the event of rain, the distribution will take place on Saturday, June 17. The three locations include:

  • DPW&T Ammendale Maintenance Facility – 11900 Montgomery Road, Beltsville, MD
    DPW&T D’Arcy Road Maintenance Facility – 8401 D’Arcy Road, Forestville, MD
  • DPW&T Brandywine Maintenance Facility – 12911 Cherry Tree Crossing Road, Brandywine, MD

The County is working with municipalities to assist in the distribution of sandbags. Distributions to municipalities began last week. Residents who live in municipalities should have received information from their respective municipal governments on the distribution in their areas. Proof of residency will be required for residents, whether they are picking up sandbags from the County or their local municipality.

“Crews have been working to fill an estimate of about 25,000 sandbags prior to the rainy season,” said Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) Director, Michael Johnson. “We are excited about this program and appreciate the partnership with the Office of Homeland Security, as we navigate the impacts of climate change and historic flooding in Maryland.”
