Prince George’s County to Launch Sandbag Program to Help Protect Residents from Flooding
Residents Will be Provided Sandbags to Protect Homes During Severe Weather Events

LARGO, MD – Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) will hold a press conference on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 11:00 AM to launch the County’s Sandbag Program. As the rainy season in Maryland quickly approaches, the County will provide sandbags to municipalities and residents to help protect residential structures within low-lying areas of the County during heavy periods of rain.

The Sandbag Program is part of the County Executive’s broader efforts to mitigate flooding due to climate change, which include increased investments in stormwater management and a new countywide curbside composting program. The County is working with municipal governments to help distribute sandbags to residents living within incorporated areas of the County. Residents in unincorporated areas of the County will be able to pick up sandbags on a one-time, first-come, first-served basis on Saturday, June 10, at three locations across the County.

The County has purchased a sandbag filling machine to assist with the program, which will be on-site for the press conference. Media that attend will receive a quick demonstration of the machine immediately following the press conference.
