Don't Forget to Scoop That PoopDog waste is more than a nightmare for our shoes. Just like human sewage, untreated pet fecal matter is harmful to waterways. Rain washes dog waste and associated disease-causing organisms, such as salmonella, into rivers, beaches, and the Chesapeake Bay via storm drains. To learn more, watch the Department of the Environment’s (DoE) “Scoop that Poop” video here and visit the DoE website here. Keep Your Pets SafeWhile Spring CleaningIt’s spring-cleaning time - be sure to consider your pets when you are scrubbing, dusting, and refreshing your home. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has developed a comprehensive list of household products that may not be harmful to humans but can be dangerous to pets. Check out this article aspca.org/pet-care/animal on how to clean safely, and products not to use around pets. MDA Spay/Neuter Grant for Feral CatsThe Prince George’s County Animal Services Division (ASD) received a grant from the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to spay/neuter and vaccinate for rabies for 240 feral cats in the Capitol Heights area (20743 zip code). This grant will assist in ASD efforts to help humanely reduce feral cats’ overall numbers. For more information, visit our website at www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/4090/Get-Help-with-TNVR. With this Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR), the cats will be returned to the area where they were trapped after surgery. TNVR provides a long-term solution to concerns about community cats by reducing their population. The returned cats are healthier after TNVR and countless kittens, many of which would have died on the streets, are not born. The goal is to alter as many cats as possible in the next few months before the weather warms up and the cats start reproducing.
