Prince George's Proud:
An Update From County Executive Alsobrooks

Dear Prince Georgians:

During the month of April, we join communities across the nation to recognize National Second Chance Month, which brings awareness to the importance of supporting the safe and successful reentry of individuals returning to the community following incarceration. This month also highlights the role that individuals, communities, and organizations across the nation play in providing meaningful opportunities for returning citizens.

We recognize the importance of supporting our returning citizens and are committed to providing quality services that assist them as they transition back to the community. During the first term of our administration, we served over 3,700 returning citizens through the Bridge Center at Adam’s House. In addition, last year we created our Returning Citizen Affairs Division (RCAD) within my office, which is responsible for supporting returning citizens and working to ensure that they have access to the necessary resources, support, and opportunities that are critical to a successful transition.

In recognition of National Second Chance Month, the RCAD will host a series of events throughout the month, including our first annual Returning Citizens Summit on Saturday, April 29, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Prince George’s Community College. The summit will feature a series of conversations and workshops on the transition from incarceration to home. Experts will come together to share their viewpoints, experiences, and resources that focus on reducing recidivism and improving public safety. Registration is required in advance. Interested individuals can register here.

We are also moving forward in our search process for the next CEO of Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). As we search for a new CEO, it is important that we hear from our residents. That’s why we are hosting a public engagement forum on Wednesday, April 26, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Charles H. Flowers High School. This forum will allow County residents to express their thoughts regarding the search for the CEO of our public school system and speak directly to members of the national search firm and selection committee.

Residents interested in testifying at the forum must register online here by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 25. Testimony will be limited to 3 minutes per person. If you wish to attend the forum but do not wish to testify, there is no need to register in advance. Written testimony is also being accepted and can be submitted via email to CountyExecutive@co.pg.md.us by 5:00 PM on Friday, April 28.

We encourage all Prince Georgians to join us for this important discussion and look forward to hearing your feedback and ideas as we work to select a CEO that will effectively lead our school system and help build on the successes we have experienced under Dr. Monica Goldson’s leadership.

Yours in service,

Angela Alsobrooks
Prince George’s County Executive

Spotlight On Prince George's

Prince George's County Ranks #1 in Recycling and Diverting Trash in Maryland

First in State Recycling

Prince George’s County residents and businesses are recycling more and trashing less! The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) released the Solid Waste Management and Diversion Report, which published figures for calendar year 2021, and Prince George's reclaimed the number one spot in recycling and waste diversion!

Preventing valuable materials from being discarded as trash, which ultimately ends up in the landfill, is known as waste diversion. Some waste diversion activities include recycling, repurposing, composting, and decreasing the amount of trash produced from the beginning, also known as source reduction, like reducing disposable single-use items.

Help us keep the top spot in the State. Read how to "Recycle Right" and various recycling alternatives in the County by visiting the Department of the Environment website here.

Secretary Atticks solicited feedback on how current MDA programs are working and how the agency can continue to support farmers during a roundtable discussion with several PGSCD farm cooperators. We want to thank Secretary Atticks and his staff for taking a day to speak with PGSCD staff and farmers in Prince George’s County!
