Business Spotlight: Captain White Adds Steamed Seafood to the Menu!

The Business Development Section (BDS) recently assisted Captain White Seafood, located at 6308 Livingston Road, Oxon Hill, with updating their permit application to include serving steamed seafood. In addition to live crabs, live crawfish, frozen crab legs and raw shrimp, Captain White now also offers an assortment of steamed seafood. Captain White moved to the County after 30 years at The Wharf in the District. The Oxon Hill location is less than 10 minutes from many popular attractions such as Top Golf, the Tanger Outlets and National Harbor. The market also sells items such as spices, mallets, and table paper. “We are very excited to be a part of the business community, and we look forward to serving delicious seafood to County customers,” said Manager Doug White. For more details and operating hours, visit the market’s website at Captain White Seafood.

The Inside Scoop: Permitting Tips for 2023!

Helpful Tips words in scrabble letters in red on green

As 2022 comes to a close and the new year approaches, the BDS encourages entrepreneurs to create a checklist while pursuing permitting and licensing for their new business ventures. Here are the top five tips to start off successfully:

  1. Obtain a zoning determination letter prior to signing a lease or purchasing a property. See the Zoning Certification Procedures at Zoning-Certification-Procedures (mncppc.org).
  2. When buying or leasing a space, inquire about prior permits and research the permit history to ensure that all work done was properly permitted and inspected. Access the Permit History by Street Address feature on the DPIE website to research permits.
  3. Hire design professionals to submit your applications and licensed contractors with good track records to do the work. Require your professionals to add you to ePlan to ensure you receive updates regarding review of your plans. This way you are aware of the entire review process.
  4. Be familiar with your target dates, financing, lease terms, etc., to limit delays in your project’s plan development and construction.
  5. Try to establish your new business in a similar commercial space to minimize construction costs.

If you would like a consultation on navigating the permitting and licensing process, please contact the team by emailing dpiebizdev@co.pg.md.us. It would also be helpful to schedule a DPIE Connect — Mini Preliminary Design Review Meeting as discussed below.
