Prince George's County to Host Vision Zero Back to School Traffic Garden Event

LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T), Perrywood Elementary School, Prince George’s County Police Department Division II Community Engagement Unit and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) are hosting the Vision Zero Back to School Traffic Garden Event on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. The event will take place behind the Largo/Kettering/Perrywood Community Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is the latest youth initiative under the Vision Zero Prince George’s strategy to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries on County roadways by 2040.

Traffic gardens are small versions of streets, designed to provide children a fun and safe space to learn and practice the rules of the road. Children can use scooters, bicycles, wheelchairs or walk to navigate through a traffic garden. This event is being held at the County’s first traffic garden, which was completed in Spring 2021.

“We are Prince George’s Proud to host this back-to-school opportunity for children and their families to learn about sharing our roads with drivers and people walking and biking,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “Traffic safety education for all users of the road is a vital component to the Vision Zero strategy.

“All ages have a part in working towards Vision Zero,” said DPW&T Acting Director Michael Johnson. “We are promoting safe road habits that last a lifetime in a fun, memorable environment, that participants can share with their families and peers, who can then share with their families and peers and so on.”

Participants are invited to navigate through the Vision Zero traffic garden, while learning how to “Be Seen, Be Alert and Be Safe” while biking and walking. Kids and their families will also have a chance to play games, enjoy popsicles, check out police vehicles and take home high visibility giveaways.
