Prince George’s County Receives $20.5 Million RAISE Grant Award for the New Carrollton
Multi-Modal Transportation Station
Dear Prince Georgians,
We are excited to announce that Prince George’s County is a recipient of the FY22 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant award from the United States Department of Transportation. The $20.5 million award will fund the construction of the New Carrollton Multi-Modal Transportation Station Project that will bring major infrastructure improvements and further catalyze transit-oriented development in the area.
The improvements to the station will include a new train hall for the existing MARC, Metrorail, and Amtrak service, incorporating connections to Metrobus, TheBus, and Greyhound bus services and the future Maryland Purple Line light rail. In addition, the project will bring new sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting, signalization, and traffic calming improvements to Garden City Drive to improve access to the station as well as the train hall plaza space. This will create a vibrant hub that is attractive for new commercial and residential development and will provide better connections between the transit options available at the station.
We are excited about this project because it is yet another symbol of rising opportunity for all Prince Georgians, transforming the largest employment cluster in the County into a true “downtown” area and helping to ensure that New Carrollton becomes the premier transit hub on the eastern seaboard. From a regional perspective, with both development and job growth typically occurring on the west side of the region, creating new job centers with greater access to transit in Prince George’s County is a chance to rebalance economic growth to the east side, address historic inequities, and provide our County with critical economic assets that will transform our local economy for generations to come.
Creating these new job centers throughout the region’s transit network also helps to balance public transit ridership, which will decrease traffic on the Beltway and encourage residents and visitors to use our public transit system. In addition, they will balance housing needs, increasing the ability of our residents to live closer to work.
The redevelopment of this transit center is just one of many ongoing projects underway in New Carrollton. We recently announced the groundbreaking of The Margaux, a 291-unit workforce housing residential building adjacent to the New Carrollton Metro Station that will offer modern, transit-oriented housing at below-market rates. The Margaux is part of a larger 2.3 million square foot, mixed-use joint development partnership between WMATA and Urban Atlantic and is one of several projects to break ground at the site, which also includes office space, retail, additional housing, and WMATA’s new Maryland Office Building that will all be anchored by the new multi-modal transportation hub.
We want to thank our federal delegation, WMATA, and Urban Atlantic for their support on this project and dedication to improving the quality of life for Prince Georgians. We are so proud of the progress we are making to ensure that our County continues to be a great place to live, work, and play, and we know that we have so much to look forward to in the future.
