Summer is here, and Vision Zero Prince George's is still paving the way for zero traffic deaths and serious injuries. This June/July update highlights safety improvements for all users and safety initiatives for our youngest Prince Georgians. Public Safety Day and Bicycle Rodeo on June 28, IKEA College Park
The Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD) hosted a Public Safety Day and Bicycle Rodeo at IKEA College Park on June 28. Vision Zero Prince George's installed a pop-up traffic garden for younger children to learn about road signs and practice roadway skills in a safe space.

Community Bicycle Rodeos, Prince George's County
The M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation hosted nine bicycle rodeos at Community Centers to teach children the rules of the road and how to bike safely. Kids took the Vision Zero Safety Pledge and received reflective bags filled with safety items including “Be Seen Be Alert Be Safe” lights, “RideSmart” bike bells and activity books. More bicycle rodeos are planned for the fall.

Marlboro Pike Improvements, Prince George's County
DPW&T is improving safety along Marlboro Pike with a road diet, median refuge areas, renewed and continuous sidewalks, upgraded and interconnected signals and continuous LED street lighting. This project has three phases:
Phase 1: Brooks Drive to Silver Hill Road (Completed June 2022)
Phase 2: DC Line to Brooks Drive
Phase 3: Silver Hill Road to beyond Forestville Road

Ritchie Marlboro Road and North Riding Road Traffic Signal, Upper Marlboro
DPW&T has launched a new traffic signal on Ritchie Marlboro Road at North Riding Road to allow safer and efficient traffic movement in and out of the Marlboro Ridge community. This new signal creates gaps in the traffic stream along Ritchie Marlboro Road and facilitates safer movement of pedestrians and vehicles.

Bus Shelter Upgrades, Prince George's County
Bus shelters provide a safe and comfortable place to sit and stand while waiting for the bus.
DPW&T is conducting an audit to guide site selection for upgrading and replacing bus shelters. Locations for new or upgraded bus shelters may include Glenarden, Chillum, Largo, Riverdale Park, Upper Marlboro and District Heights. The improvements will begin this summer.

Pedestrian Safety Action Plan (PSAP)
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) works with communities to improve pedestrian safety by identifying challenges, setting goals and objectives, focusing on areas of need, setting priorities and taking action. Host a Bike Rodeo or Pop-up Traffic Garden
Bike rodeos and pop-up traffic garden events teach people of all ages how to walk and bike safely and how to follow the rules of the road. To host a bike rodeo, please complete our Bike Rodeo Request Form.

Rent a Traffic Calming Yard Sign
