Senior Appreciation Week Recap
Dear Prince Georgians,
We are excited to share that this week we celebrated Senior Appreciation Week for the first time ever in Prince George’s County! Our County is the proud home to more than 184,000 residents over the age of 60, and this year we wanted to take an opportunity to recognize the invaluable strength and wisdom they bring to our community.
Each year during the month of May, the nation joins together to celebrate Older Americans Month to acknowledge the significant contributions that older adults have made to our society. This year’s theme, “Age My Way,” is an opportunity for us to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.
The Prince George’s County Department of Family Services’ Aging and Disabilities Services Division (ADSD) supports a broad range of services and programs for older adults and their families. The Division is an excellent resource for older adults who want to maintain the highest possible quality of life with independence and dignity. The goal of the ADSD is to assist seniors and their family members with the many challenges of the aging process.
In addition, our Department of Public Works and Transportation offers a variety of transportation services and resources for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Our goal is to create and promote programs that encourage older adults to live healthy and active lifestyles, and through these services, our seniors have the opportunity to participate in activities that help them remain active and engaged within their communities.
It is important for us to ensure that our older adults have access to resources and services that improve their quality of life. We remain committed to continuing to provide opportunities that allow our seniors to age in place and lead fulfilling lives in our communities, and we are proud to support them in every way that we can.
Yours in service,
Angela Alsobrooks Prince George’s County Executive
Senior Foster Parent Appreciation
Each year during the month of May, the nation celebrates National Foster Care Month to recognize and honor the contributions of foster parents. During Senior Appreciation Week, we wanted to take an opportunity to highlight Ms. Joyce McNeal, a senior foster parent who has enriched the lives of so many of our children in need. Ms. McNeal has been a foster parent for 14 years, and we want to thank her for her unwavering commitment and dedication to our youth. Check out this video of Ms. McNeal sharing her experience as a foster parent and the joy that it brings her to help those in need.
For more information on how to become a foster parent, contact the Department of Social Services at 301-909-2300 or visit their website here.
