Prince George's County COVID-19 Vaccination Update

Dear Prince Georgians:

  • Yesterday, I announced that we will reinstitute an indoor public mask mandate in the County beginning this Sunday, August 8, 2021 at 5:00 PM, due to a continued rise in COVID-19 metrics.
  • Beginning Sunday, August 8 at 5:00 PM, all residents and visitors over the age of five will be required to wear masks in all indoor public venues and businesses in Prince George’s County, even if they are fully vaccinated.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, restaurants, gyms, retail stores, entertainment venues, conference centers, and office settings.
  • Similar to previous mask mandates, some exceptions apply, such as when an individual is actively eating or drinking or individuals who have a recognized disability that prevents them from wearing a mask.
  • The new mandate is based on the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance that individuals in areas with “high” or “substantial” transmission of COVID-19 should wear masks in indoor public settings, even if they are fully vaccinated. According to the CDC, Prince George’s County is now in the “substantial” transmission category.
  • The County’s positivity rate is 4.7% as of August 2, up from 0.9% on July 5. The average daily case rate has increased to 11.6 cases per 100,000 residents as of August 2, the highest rate observed since May 5. Finally, the County’s infection rate is 1.33 as of July 28, which places the County in the “high risk” range.
  • If you have not been vaccinated, please do so as soon as possible, not only to protect you and your loved ones, but also to prevent us from sliding back further in our recovery.
  • PGCPS is hosting another round of COVID-19 vaccination clinics this month for students 12+. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get protected from COVID-19 before the school year begins. Learn more here.

Yours in service,

Prince George’s County Vaccine Equity Team

Vaccine Canvass Program
  • We are proud to announce that Prince George’s County has completed its vaccine canvassing program, which has been a model of success for other jurisdictions seeking to roll out similar programs across the country.
  • The County’s Vaccine Equity Team identified roughly a dozen communities that were a priority, based on socio-economic need, existing vaccination rates, and population size.
  • Over 260,000 doors were knocked, more than 547,000 texts were sent, and 1.3 million calls were made to residents. Information provided by canvassers included assistance in scheduling a vaccine appointment and resources on COVID-19 testing, as well as other County services such as rental assistance, food assistance and employment assistance.
  • In addition, the conversations with residents revealed the continued spread of misinformation regarding the vaccine. This data will help inform the Health Department’s messaging as the County continues to bridge the disparity gap that has placed its most vulnerable populations at risk for COVID-19.

Vaccine Supply & Administration

Vaccine Supply August 6
  • The County Health Department has provided over 165,000 vaccinations, including over 1,320 the week of July 25. We provided over 900 vaccinations this week through August 5.
  • This week, 298 first doses and 612 second doses were provided as of August 5.
  • Overall, we saw an increase in first or single doses last week (July 25-July 31) to over 8,100 residents, compared to approximately 6,400 in the prior week.
