An Update From County Executive Alsobrooks
Dear Prince Georgians:
On Monday, May 31 we recognized Memorial Day, a time where we remember the men and women in our military who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our nation. I want to take a moment to honor the men and women in our community who have given their lives in service to our country. I encourage residents to visit the standing memorials dedicated to our fallen veterans that are nestled throughout the County, such as the World War I Memorial in Upper Marlboro, the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, the Bladensburg World War I Memorial (Peace Cross), or the newly erected District Heights Veterans Park. We are forever grateful for the sacrifice made by our fallen heroes, as their memories and legacies will always live on in our community.
While we honor the lives of those we have lost in our military, I also want to honor and congratulate all of our Prince George’s County graduates in the class of 2021. Although this was a school year unlike any other, each of these graduates persevered and made it to the finish line. I am proud to see them overcome the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many had to make the hard transition to virtual learning for most of the year without seeing friends or having an outlet like after-school activities. I want to commend every graduate for their patience and their discipline. We are Prince George’s Proud of all our graduates, and we can’t wait to see what they will accomplish in the future.

Prince George’s County is the Crown Jewel of Maryland, and greatness truly grows here. National Harbor & Stand Up & Deliver Vaccination Event
 We are inviting County residents to come and receive a COVID-19 vaccine at a special Stand Up & Deliver event on Friday, June 18, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the National Harbor. We will be providing COVID-19 vaccinations with no appointment needed. Children ages 12 and older are welcome and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The event will also feature a job fair opportunity, prizes like tickets to the Capital Wheel, and grocery distributions from our Stand Up & Deliver Program.
Waste Collection Schedule for Juneteenth
 Prince George’s County will observe Juneteenth, an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery, on Friday, June 18. Bulky trash collections will be suspended on that day and will resume on Monday, June 21. All yard trim and organic collections remain on schedule for collection on Monday, June 14. Trash and recycling collections will be on schedule for collection Tuesday, June 15 through Friday, June 18, and have no changes.
Tinkers Creek Watershed Community Meeting June 29
 The Prince George’s County Department of the Environment (DoE) will host a virtual community meeting on Tuesday, June 29 at 7:00 PM, to provide ideas for residents to help protect streams in their community. DoE developed a watershed study for the Tinkers Creek watershed under a grant from the State of Maryland. Residents will also learn about a few DoE programs to help them protect their streams. Community members will be able to ask questions directly to the presenters during this meeting. Registration is free and open to all members of the public.  June is Flood Awareness Month. Hurricane season begins now and continues through October, so be sure you're flood prepared. DPW&T Unveils First Vision Zero Traffic Garden in the County
 On May 21, 2021, the County unveiled the first Vision Zero Prince George’s Traffic Garden at Perrywood Elementary School. The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) partnered with the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation, and Prince George’s County Public Schools to install the traffic garden. The traffic garden is a protected set of small-sized streets with scaled-down traffic features and other fun elements, designed for children and their families to learn the rules of the road and the importance of bicycle and pedestrian safety away from street traffic. The unveiling was held at the Perrywood pit stop as a part of Bike to Work Day, a national initiative that encourages exercise and bicycle commuting.
DPW&T invites families and small chaperoned groups to visit the traffic garden with their bicycles, tricycles and wheelchairs. The Perrywood Elementary School Traffic Garden is open to the public weekday evenings and weekends, when school is not in session. DPW&T wants to remind residents to please bike and walk safely and wear a helmet while biking.
DPW&T Celebrates National Bike Month
 National Bike Month is held annually during the month of May to promote bicycling as a form of transportation and as a great way to improve health and wellness.
On Tuesday, May 18, the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) hosted a free webinar for County residents entitled Commuting by Bike: How to Ride Safely in Traffic, on Roadways and Trails. 37 attendees tuned in for the bike webinar facilitated by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA).
On Friday, May 21, DPW&T, M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Prince George’s Countywide Bicycle and Pedestrian Community Advisory Group co-hosted a Bike to Work Day Pit Stop at the Largo/Kettering/Perrywood Community Center in Upper Marlboro. Representatives from local and state agencies, bicycle clubs from across the County, and community groups volunteered to staff the event with DPW&T and M-NCPPC.
John Epps, Owner of Maryland Park Bicycles, donated helmets and distributed them to cyclists who needed helmets and attended the Bike to Work Day event. Over 125 cyclists attended the event supported by Vision Zero Prince George’s, which brought together cyclists of various ages and abilities.
Step Forward to a New You, Part 2
 Following last month’s successful “Step Forward to a New You” event, the Health Department is once again teaming up with WKYS-FM for a special live, online discussion on WKYSDC.com, Facebook and YouTube to help residents improve their overall health. Join WKYS DJ Little Bacon Bear on Thursday, June 10 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM for “Step Forward to a New You: The New Norm After the Storm, Part 2,” featuring Health Department behavioral health expert Dr. Billina Shaw and local youth. The purpose of this free event is to encourage our youth to talk about emotional challenges they may be facing and learn about resources for those who may be experiencing depression or anxiety.

Rabies Vaccination Clinic June 5
 While rabies is a 100% preventable disease, more than 59,000 people die from the disease around the world each year. Protect your pets and your community by getting your furry family members vaccinated for rabies. The City of Bowie and the County Health Department are co-sponsoring a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic Saturday, June 5, at Bowie City Hall, 15901 Excalibur Road, Bowie, MD.
Pets must be at least three months old to receive a rabies vaccine. Vaccinations are $10. The clinic will also offer microchipping for $10 and County pet licenses will also be for sale ($10 spayed/neutered, $25 unaltered). County law requires all cats, dogs and ferrets be licensed with the County by four months old and annually thereafter. Only cash is accepted at the clinic. Father’s Day Pledge Initiative June 17
 The Department of Family Services, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Division will host its 2nd Father’s Day Pledge Initiative. Father's Day is a day to celebrate and honor fathers, fatherhood, paternal bonds and most of all, the influence that fathers have in society. The Father’s Day Pledge will bring attention to the influence and impact men have to create and maintain relationships that are healthy and respectful for a community free of domestic violence.
The goal of the initiative is to celebrate Father’s Day by raising awareness on healthy relationships through a conversation being led by men. There will be a panel discussion for fathers, father figures, men and mentors focusing on the wholeness of men in our community (spiritual, mental, financial, nutritional and physical). The discussion will be interactive and will encourage men to take action, understanding that violence affects everyone in every zip code and of every ethnicity, religion, and gender. Department of Family Services to Hosts Drive-by Celebration for Theresa Grant
 Join the Department of Family Services for a drive-by celebration on June 16 as they honor Associate Director and Aging and Disabilities Services Division Manager Theresa Grant for her 35 years of dedication and service in the Prince George’s County Government. Ms. Grant has led a distinguished career honorably serving the citizens and residents of Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland. Throughout her career, Ms. Grant has been a strong advocate and supporter of improving the quality of life within our community and passionately leading the development of services for older adults and helping seniors age in place. Please join family, friends and colleagues on June 16 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at the Department of Family Services in Camps Springs, in celebration of her retirement to acknowledge her outstanding accomplishments.
Department of Corrections Honors Civilian and Officer of the Year
 The Prince George’s County Department of Corrections would like to celebrate its Civilian of the Year, Renee Morrison. Ms. Morrison has become the face of the agency’s Human Resources Division over the course of her 35-year career. She is also a member of the Risk Management Team, which is responsible for making daily contact with employees who are off work due to COVID-19 symptoms or awaiting test results. Ms. Morrison is the epitome of teamwork and leadership. She has truly played an integral role in making the Department of Corrections the illustrious agency it is today. For these reasons and many more, Renee Morrison is the Civilian of the Year.
The Prince George’s County Department of Corrections’ Officer of the Year is Cpl. Daniel Morgan, who has been with the agency for 13 years. Cpl. Morgan is the epitome of commitment and dedication. For years, he worked without complaints while suffering from a debilitating kidney disease. He served in a variety of roles during this time to include the Emergency Response Team, which is one of the most physically demanding jobs in the jail. After a successful kidney transplant with his older brother, Cpl. Morgan has returned to full duty at the facility and is back on the Emergency Response Team. A walking example of determination and grit, Cpl. Morgan is truly an asset to the Department of Corrections. For these reasons and many more, he is the Officer of the Year.
Prince George’s Celebrates Centenarian Twin Sisters
We were proud to kick off the 100 Events of Summer Initiative by celebrating twin sisters Ms. Elaine Foster and Ms. Evelyn Lowe, who recently turned 100. On June 1, the Office of Community Relations held a drive-by celebration for the twin sisters to mark the official launch of their 100 Events of Summer Initiative, a series of events held throughout the summer to connect with residents across the County. They were joined by County Executive Alsobrooks, Fire Chief Tiffany Green, and other special guests. Please join us in wishing Ms. Foster and Ms. Lowe a happy 100th birthday! Girls Make History on High School’s Baseball Team
 When COVID-19 caused some hesitation among the regular players of the Surrattsville High School baseball team, Kylei Matthews and Tiara Pinkard helped save the Hornet’s baseball season by stepping up to fill the void on the team. We are so excited to see Kylei and Tiara break barriers at Surrattsville High School. Congratulations to the entire Hornets baseball team for working hard and sticking together this season, despite the challenges they faced. Click here to watch the story on NBC4.
