Phase I of the expansion to the Food Scrap Composting program is underway! This first phase seeks 3,000 participants in targeted service areas that have Friday trash and recycling collection services. Participants will have food scraps collected on Mondays, as part of the overall “Organics” collection services, which also includes yard trim.
Eligible residents will have received a postcard in the mail with opt-in information, including individual verification codes. The deadline to opt-in is next Friday, May 28th.
Prince George’s County owns the largest municipal organics composting operation of its kind on the East Coast. A recent waste study indicated organics comprised nearly 50% of the materials disposed in the landfill annually, with 24% of that being food scraps. In an effort to realize our waste diversion and source reduction goals the County is providing residents with a unique curbside collection opportunity to divert organic materials, for composting, including: food, food soiled paper, uncoated paper plates and bags, paper towels and napkins, coffee grounds, tea bags and loose tea, paper ice cream containers, egg shells, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, meat and bones, seafood and shell fish, bread, pasta and grains, in addition to yard trim.
Do not miss this opportunity to become a part of this unique program to propel Prince George’s County forward in meeting its waste diversion and source reduction goals! To learn more about food scrap composting or the Prince George’s County Organics Composting Facility visit mypgc.us/compost.
