Prince George's County COVID-19 Vaccination Update

Dear Prince Georgians:

  • I want to remind you to join us for the Vaccine-a-thon taking place at the Sports & Learning Complex today, May 14 until midnight. The event features prizes, special guests, snacks and give-a-ways. Starting at 6:00 PM tonight, the County will allow 12 to 15-year-olds to be vaccinated at the Sports & Learning Complex Vaccine-a-thon. Walks-ups are being accepted until 11:30 PM. Minors under the age of 18 must have parental consent and be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Residents can secure a spot for the Vaccine-a-thon by booking an appointment at bit.ly/24HourMDVax.
  • In addition, due to a rapid decline in key COVID-19 metrics, as well as increasing vaccination rates in the County, I am excited to announce that we will be lifting restrictions on our business community next week.
  • Beginning Monday, May 17, at 5:01 PM, all indoor and outdoor venues in the County may resume normal operations. Face masks are still required for all indoor venues, while on public transportation, and at crowded outdoor venues including concert venues and ticketed sporting events. Our County Health Department will consider future changes to mask requirements based on key COVID-19 metrics and vaccination rates among County residents.
  • Our COVID-19 metrics have dropped substantially over the past week. In just five days, the positivity rate dropped from 4% to 3%, when previously it would take about 10 days to see a one-point decrease in that metric. In addition, the average daily case rate per 100,000 residents dropped from 14.2 to 8.7 in just five days. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 cases have also dropped significantly, from a high of 172 on April 15 to 80 as of May 11.
  • According to health officials, these trends indicate that the vaccines have been effective at preventing the spread of COVID-19, including its variants. However, in order to continue trending in the right direction we must continue to get more residents vaccinated.
  • We are still in the midst of a health emergency. I encourage every Prince Georgian who has not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine to sign up and join the hundreds of thousands of Prince Georgians who are already Proud to be Protected against COVID-19. Individuals can schedule their own first-dose appointments by visiting mypgc.us/ProudToBeProtected.

Yours in Service,

Angela Alsobrooks

  • To date, the County has received 179,558 vaccines, and has administered 142,379 of those doses (approximately 79.3%). This metric (percentage of vaccine administered) changes day to day as new vaccine shipments come in and the number of second dose vaccines waiting to be given are administered in the days ahead.
