The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation is the recipient of the 2020 Maryland Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards for the Tucker Road and Palmer Road projects. The projects addressed some of the pressing infrastructure, pedestrian and bicycle safety concerns in Ft. Washington.
“We are Prince George’s Proud that the County has received these prestigious awards,” said Prince George’s County Executive, Angela Alsobrooks. “The completion of these projects exemplifies the work ethics of the men, women and heroes who continue to work on the front lines in the County.”
Receiving the award during the COVID-19 pandemic is especially notable, as DPW&T crews have effectively and efficiently continued to work on roadway and safety projects. These efforts are crucial to maintaining a safe transportation system and achieving the Vision Zero Prince George’s goal of eliminating serious injuries and fatalities.
During the summer of 2020, DPW&T completed the Tucker Road – Saint Barnabas Road to Palmer Road and Palmer Road – Tucker Road ending at Della Lane roadway improvement projects. The work included stormwater management improvements, constructing sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
“We are pleased that pedestrians and bikers are able to safely access civic and recreational facilities such as the Tucker Road Community Center and the Ice Rink Sport Complex.” said DPW&T Director, Terry Bellamy.
For more information, see the projects highlighted in the Vision Zero Spotlight article.
Despite a pandemic, cold temperatures and significant weather events, DPW&T continues to aggressively complete projects designed to strengthen the County's infrastructure. Initiated in December 2020, the Drexel Street and Sligo Parkway Drainage Improvement Project is an example of how our team works hand in hand with residents to remedy issues throughout the county.
There were many concerns at this location, including a lack of curb and gutter, significant erosion to the roadways and near the existing storm drain manhole, as well as a sinkhole that required emergency repairs.
The existing stream started right at the edge of the roadway and was significantly lower than the roadway, creating a steep drop. The storm flow was causing severe erosion from the roadway down to the stream due to the steepness and concentrated flows leaving the roadway.
To address these issues, curb and gutter were installed along with a new inlet, an outfall was extended/restored, and a drop structure manhole was installed to diminish the energy in the storm surges and protect the stream from erosion.
We would like to thank our everyday heroes, DPW&T's Office of Highway Maintenance. A special thanks to:

Thanks should also be extended to NZI Construction Corporation, whose teamwork and expertise played an integral part in the execution and success of the project.
In an effort to assist the taxi industry in remaining resilient and competitive, the Taxi Operations Section has implemented a digital taxi dispatching system called Curb. Curb is a cloud-based scheduling and dispatch system that connects Prince George’s County residents to reliable and convenient taxi service.
During the initial phase of implementation, Curb is primarily being used to support the Prince George’s County Call-A-Bus Saturday dialysis service pilot program. As part of this phase, the County is subsidizing prescheduled trips for Call-A-Bus participants in need of transport to and from dialysis appointments on Saturdays.
Curb has also assisted Call-A-Bus with weekday service when there is an increase in trips and during snow operations. To date, Curb has successfully completed approximately 186 trips.
Be on the lookout for updates about Curb on DPW&T's website and via social media (@PGCountyDPWT) as we look to enlist additional taxi operators and expand service.
