County Executive Alsobrooks Appoints New Chair and Vice Chair for Prince George’s County Board of Education

Dear Prince Georgians:

As you may have heard, last week I was Prince George’s Proud to appoint Dr. Juanita Miller as Chair of the Prince George’s County Board of Education upon the resignation of Dr. Alvin Thornton. Dr. Miller has a vast amount of experience in school administration and working with various agencies that interact with our school system. We are excited that she is bringing her exceptional leadership skills back to our school system to serve our students, teachers and families.

The Honorable Juanita Miller served as a State Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly where she represented the 25th Legislative District of Prince George’s County. During her term, she served as Chair of the Prince George’s County Affairs Committee, Chair of the Women’s Caucus Legislative Committee and Chair of the Black Caucus’ Business Roundtable Conference.

Prior to her retirement from the District of Columbia Public Schools, Dr. Miller served as an administrator at the executive level in central administration. She also served as a liaison for the school system interfacing with various government and private agencies. Dr. Miller served in Prince George’s County Public Schools as an instructional specialist and school program administrator, with a focus on special education.

Active as a community leader, Dr. Miller has served on the executive committees of various civic and community associations, including the Prince George’s County NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Top Ladies of Distinction Legislative Committee. She also served as Chair of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), the first African American woman to hold that position.

Dr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and Psychology from the District of Columbia Teacher’s College, and holds a master’s in Special Education and a Doctorate in Leadership and Policy Management from George Washington University.

I was also Prince George’s Proud to appoint current Board Member Sonya Williams as Vice Chair of the Prince George’s County Board of Education. Her leadership these past several years has been critical in supporting student success, school construction and community engagement, and we are excited to have her in this new leadership role to continue supporting our school system.

Mrs. Williams, first appointed by County Executive Rushern Baker in January 2014, was sworn in for her second elected term to represent District 9, in December 2018. During her first term on the County Board of Education, Mrs. Williams worked closely with the PGCPS Capital Programs Office to improve school construction and renovation, sponsored transportation for high school students to attend an annual college fair, and has been an active member of several Board committees in key leadership positions.

Mrs. Williams is a civil engineer with over 25 years of project management experience on local and national construction projects. Her notable projects include expansion of BWI-Marshall Airport and, most recently, the Tanger Outlet Mall. Mrs. Williams has also served as the PTSA President at Gwynn Park High School, where she actively encouraged participation and helped make school policy. Mrs. Williams’ leadership skills in the community have enabled her to communicate across different education and experience levels, and build successful teams that focus on similar goals.

Mrs. Williams holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in International Organizational Leadership from Georgetown University. She has been a resident of Prince George’s County since age 5.

I look forward to working together with our new Board of Education leadership, as well as the other members of the Board of Education, to continue delivering results for the students, families and staff of our school system.

Yours in service,

Angela Alsobrooks

Prince George’s County Executive
