Salt being loaded onto a snowplow outside the Salt Dome at DPW&T's D'Arcy Road Maintenance Facility.
On Wednesday, December 16, 2020 the Department of Public Works and Transportation, along with partnering agencies that included the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Department of the Environment, deployed for the County's first snowstorm of the season. Staff worked around the clock to ensure roads were passable and as safe as possible.
This winter weather event allowed us to put into action new operational COVID-19 procedures that were first introduced during the department's Snow and Ice Dry Run on October 23, 2020. New practices ranging from virtual reporting for staff to enhanced disinfectant procedures were implemented smoothly. We are dedicated to keeping our employees safe as they serve you and help to keep our roadways safe and clear.

As a reminder, please use salt responsibly to lessen its environmental impact. Also, we encourage you to wait until 48 hours after snowfall has ended before reporting concerns regarding snow removal on roadways. We assure you that our dedicated crews work as efficiently as possible with safety as their main focus.
The 2020 Winter Community Partners' Meeting was held virtually via Zoom.
DPW&T hosted the first virtual Community Partners' Meeting on Thursday, December 3, 2020. Holding the meeting remotely ensured the safety of participants and presenters as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. The winter session of the meeting was held via Zoom, enabling attendees to listen to presentations from DPW&T and our sister agencies, the Department of the Environment (DoE) and the Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE), from the comfort and safety of their homes. Topics included Vision Zero updates, winter tips, public transportation and more!
If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can view the presentation using the links below.

The County's first Bike/Bus Lane opened this month along Garrett Morgan Boulevard.
Prince George's County's first Bike and Bus Lane was installed this month along Garrett Morgan Boulevard. The new traffic pattern shifts traffic from three lanes to two lanes, while leaving the right lane exclusively for buses and bicycles. DPW&T will install additional markings and bike stencils once the roadway is slurry sealed in the spring of 2021. A slurry seal is the application of a mixture of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate and additives to an existing asphalt pavement surface. The seal protects the roadway, improves its aesthetic and provides skid resistance.
Additionally, posted speeds have also been reduced from 35 to 30 miles per hour. The new dedicated lane and speed limit are an example of how DPW&T and Vision Zero Prince George's are working to make our roadways safer and the county more bikeable through engineering and enforcement.

DPW&T remains diligent in our efforts to protect the health of our employees and the traveling public. Procuring new technology like Thermo Scanners allows us to ensure our transit operators do not have an elevated temperature prior to starting their shifts.
Safety is our top priority, which is why we have continued to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Public Transportation Association (APTA) recommendations and guidelines. Additionally, the vehicles in our fleet are sanitized daily and our operators are protected by shields. Face coverings are required to be worn by our operators and riders to help prevent the spread of germs. We are doing our part to flatten the curve and we ask that you join us. Please do not use public transportation if you are exhibiting signs or symptoms of COVID-19 or feeling ill.
