DPW&T is Snow Ready

On Friday, October 23, 2020, DPW&T successfully conducted our very first virtual Snow and Ice Dry Run. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to keep our employees safe, this year's exercise utilized online applications and tools to connect staff, while helping to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

DPW&T provided safety kits, which included masks, door openers and hand sanitizer to all staff who were required to report in person. In addition, operators sanitized the cabs of their vehicles at the start and end of their shifts to help keep everyone safe.

The annual Dry Run provides an opportunity for inclement weather emergency procedures to be tested before winter weather arrives. To effectively respond, more than 400 DPW&T employees, engineers, administrative staff, project coordinators and bus drivers, as well as crews from other County agencies that partner with DPW&T, are assigned to a wide range of jobs including snowplow drivers, safety inspectors, supply monitors and customer service representatives.

During the Dry Run, drivers follow their assigned routes to familiarize themselves with the roads, time their runs and identify any hazardous road conditions that need to be addressed. The Department conducts safety inspections of all vehicles and evaluates operational procedures and communication systems to implement improvements before inclement weather hits.

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

Slow Down Pedestrians Crossing

This October is the first National Pedestrian Safety Month! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched the initiative to increase awareness about pedestrian safety and remind all roadway users that safety is a shared responsibility. Governor Hogan issued a proclamation designating the first-ever "Walktober" in Maryland, recognizing the state's official exercise—walking—for its health benefits and its important role in the state’s transportation and recreation network.

We have been celebrating all month by providing tips, information and virtual events to educate and help keep pedestrians safe. In partnership with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and in coordination with several state agencies and other partners, DPW&T has made 90-minute weekly webinars available to the public. These "Walkinars", as they are called, highlight how we can collectively rally around walking.

The final virtual "Walkinar" will be held this Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 9:30 am and focus on information about walking initiatives in Maryland, how they function and how other communities can learn from their successes.

Register for the event here.

You can visit NHTSA and DPW&T's Safety Tips page for more information on how to safely navigate our roadways.

2020 Fall Growing Green with Pride Continues

GGWP 2020

This is the last week to participate in this fall's "Growing Green with Pride" monthlong initiative. The Fall 2020 Growing Green with Pride cleanup event has been underway throughout the month of October and will wrap up this Saturday, October 31, 2020.

If your community is interested in participating in this countywide litter collection activity, there is still time to register! DPW&T will provide litter grabbers, trash bags and gloves through a safe contactless pickup process. Visit mypgc.us/GrowingGreen for more information.

While the focus of this fall's initiative is litter collection, we hope to return to beautification efforts such as planting shrubs, trees and flowers next year!
