SAVE THE DATE: State of Justice Symposium

Hello Prince Georgians,

As everyone knows the coronavirus is seriously impacting our communities as well as others throughout the country and world. In light of this, drastic steps have been taken to curb the spread.  Currently, the Courthouses are closed to the public until April 6, 2020, or until further notice. My office is operating with reduced in-person staff and I have implemented our telework policy so that employees can continue their work from home.

It is also important that we take steps to ensure that the virus doesn’t spread among our jail population. The jail is a place that could present a breeding ground and further prolong this crisis. Therefore, my office is working with the public defender’s office to review release conditions for inmates.

We are considering cases in which individuals are charged with low-level, nonviolent offences or have a short time left on their sentence. Our goal is to safely and judiciously reduce the inmate population considering the public health crisis caused by the coronavirus. While no cases of the virus have been confirmed at the jail, it is important that we work proactively.
