Dear Prince Georgians,
We made it through our second snow storm of the season and I want to thank all of the men and women of our Department of Public Works and Transportation, along with everyone in our government who played a role in clearing our roads and keeping us safe during the storm. Due to the inclement weather, the FY2020 Public Budget Hearing is re-scheduled for Wednesday, February 27th, same time and location. For your convenience an updated flier is included in this newsletter edition. I am looking forward to receiving your input and seeing you next week.
Without a doubt, it’s been a busy couple of weeks…highlights include: testifying in favor of raising the minimum wage bill in Annapolis, announcing applications for the Community Partnership Grants, and seeking volunteers for a multitude of Boards and Commissions. We encourage citizens to review the criteria and apply for opportunities that peak your interest. Sharing this information with colleagues, friends or family members for consideration is always welcomed.
The first SYEP application event in Camp Springs took place last Saturday and the second one will be held this Saturday, February 23rd at Shabach Ministries Inc./First Baptist Church of Glenarden (3600 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD) from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A third event will also be held Saturday, March 2nd at New Carrollton Library (7414 Riverdale Road, New Carrollton, MD) from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
We also met with Mayors representing 27 municipalities across the county to discuss their needs and collaboration goals to Grow Prince George’s Pride. In addition, the Health Department is hosting a free Community Health Expo to raise awareness about cardiovascular health today until 7:00 pm. This is a free public event.
As the month of February comes to an end, March marks National Women’s History Month. Please Save The Date for the 34th Annual Women’s History Month Luncheon that will take place on March 21, 2019 at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. This year’s theme is “Visionary Women” in Prince George’s County. This event is a long-standing tradition hosted by the County Executive’s Office. Please considering joining us for this celebratory occasion.
Yours in service,

34th Annual Women’s History Month Luncheon
It is our great pleasure to invite everyone to the Prince George’s County’s Annual Women’s History Month Luncheon on Thursday, March 21st at Martin’s Crosswinds. This is the 34th year of a long standing tradition where we honor women in the county who have made significant contributions to our community.
We will also be announcing the recipient of the Gladys Noon Spellman Scholarship. This is another tradition that will be given to a PGCPS college bound senior planning to major in the areas of political science, public administration/government, public safety or health. It is great when we can come together to celebrate and give back at the same time. For more information email: PGCWHML@co.pg.md.us.

*Second Application Event is this Saturday

We’ve already had a record number of applicants for the Youth @ Work/Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP), our award-winning County summer jobs program. Applications are still open until March 22nd, but with a large number of applications coming through, it is better to complete one soon. Any Prince George’s County resident between the ages of 14-22 is eligible to apply for SYEP. We’ve also loosened previous eligibility restrictions, so if you’ve held a summer job through SYEP in the past, you will still be eligible to apply this year.

Food Forest at Croom High School
In the brisk cold of February, the new ‘food forest’ at Croom High School doesn’t look like much — but students explain that despite its appearance, plant roots are growing and are expected to bloom by early summer.
The food forest is one of several student-led environmental projects that are bringing science classrooms to life and inspiring students to pursue practical green careers right here in Prince George’s County.
Several local partners have funded projects and are helping students prepare for careers in their community, including: the County’s Department of Environment Arbor Day Every Day program (which funded the food forest), Interstate Commission for the Potomac River Basin (which funded the garden), the Sustainable Energy Workforce Development Program and Hyattsville-based nonprofit Neighborhood Design Center.
The William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center has also been a resource — providing students with all initial gardening tools.
