County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III to Celebrate Expansion of County Organics Composting Facility
The facility will be the largest yard trim and food waste composter on the East Coast
Largo, MD – Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III will join other local officials on Monday, May 14, 2018, to celebrate the expansion of the Prince George’s County Organics Composting Facility in Upper Marlboro. Once completed, the expanded facility will be the largest yard trim and food waste composter on the East Coast. It currently operates with an eight-heap system processing 12,000 tons of yard trim and food scraps in 2016 and will expand to a 12-windrow SG Bunker™ System processing 57,000 tons. Construction is expected to be complete by August 2018.
The County’s Organics Composting Facility is the only one in the State to accept residential, commercial and institutional food scraps and is the first in the County to pilot a food scrap composting program using the GORE® technology. The Facility produces a nutrient-rich soil compost product known as Leafgro and Leafro GOLD that eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers, adds nutrients back into the soil, increases root uptake and absorption in plants. It is sold commercially in bulk.
A tour of the facility and construction site will follow the ceremony. Attendees are advised to wear closed toe shoes that may get muddy. Event will be held rain or shine.
