"Prince George’s County is home to nearly 70,000 veterans and I salute each one, along with all veterans across this State and nation who have served this country.  Thanks to their service, our lives are free, safe and protected. It is with tremendous gratitude and pride that we honor them on this day. I encourage all Prince Georgians to take the time to say ‘thank you’ to a veteran and show support for all they have done in service for us.

On Veterans’ Day last week, Prince George’s County finds itself in the middle of a unique judicial case over one of the County’s most historic landmarks - the Peace Cross in Bladensburg, MD – a 40 foot high monument that was erected to honor 49 men from Prince George’s County who lost their lives in World War I.  Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit said the memorial “has the primary effect of endorsing religion and excessively entangles the government in religion.”

Homewood Suites breaks ground on new hotel in Largo

Frontier Development & Hospitality Group is bringing an extended-stay hotel brand to the DC region. A new Homewood Suites by Hilton began development at 9103 Basil Court in Largo, Md., minutes away from the nation's capital.

With 116 suites and 2,700 square feet of flexible meeting space, Homewood Suites by Hilton Largo/Washington DC is slated for completion in late 2018. The new hotel will be owned by Frontier and managed by OTO Development, a Spartanburg S.C.-based Johnson Management company.

Mall at Prince George's announces new tenants

Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust announced recently that it has lined up tenants for 80 percent of the space it has renovated at the Mall at Prince Georges in Hyattsville.

The mall is home to an H&M that opened in 2016 and a recently opened Flight 23 by Footaction. Those will be joined by a DSW in 16,000 square feet, a Five Below in 8,500 square feet and an Ulta Beauty in 11,000 square feet, plus three storefronts from Grand Jewels — Alex and Ani, Pandora and Kendra Scott.

As for food, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Five Guys and Mezeh Grill will open in late 2017 or early 2018, all with exterior entrances fronting Route 410 — the East-West Highway.
