Statement of County Executive Baker

Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) Approves Certificate of Need for the new Regional Medical Center located in Prince George’s County

Upper Marlboro, Maryland – Today, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III released the following statement after the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) approved Dimensions Healthcare System’s Certificate of Need (C.O.N.) for the new Regional Medical Center (RMC) in Largo, Maryland (At the Largo Metro Station and The Boulevard at Capital Centre):

“Prince Georgians have been waiting for this day for three decades.  Finally we will be getting a new state of the art Regional Medical Center in Prince George’s County to serve our growing population of nearly 900,000 people.  First and foremost, I want to thank all the Prince Georgians whose persistence, patience, and engagement have helped to keep this significant project on the agenda of every state, local and federal official who has served this County.

Over five years ago, Prince George’s County, the State of Maryland, the University of Maryland Medical System, University System of Maryland, and Dimensions Healthcare System signed a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U.) to create a state-of-the-art teaching medical facility.  Throughout the ups and downs of this process, we remained steadfast to our mission of improving healthcare delivery in Prince George’s County and the RMC was vital component of our plan.

I especially want to thank former Governor Martin O’Malley, former Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, House Speaker Michael Busch, the Prince George’s County House and Senate delegations and all Senators and Delegates from around the State who protected and prioritized the funding of this facility.  As we have said throughout this journey, this hospital and trauma center is not just for Prince George’s County;  it was also designed to serve residents of Southern Maryland.

I also want to extend my appreciation to the Maryland Health Care Commission for approving the C.O.N. and recognizing the tremendous need we have for this new hospital to fulfill the healthcare needs in this region of the state. This Regional Medical Center will improve healthcare options and outcomes in Prince George’s County and has already begun to spur transit-oriented economic development around the Largo Metro station.  We are confident it will be the anchor of “Downtown Largo” attracting brand new retail, residential, office space, and other  transit-oriented development.

Like all Prince Georgians, I am celebrating this momentous step and look forward to breaking ground on this project and beginning construction immediately on this transformative project for the County, region, and State of Maryland.”
