Prince George's Public Schools announce child safety task force

Prince George’s County Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell announced the formation of the Student Safety Task Force. In response to the ongoing criminal investigation of child sex abuse at Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary School, the Task Force will conduct a thorough review of the school district’s current policies, procedures, processes, and practices and make recommendations to further safeguard children from harm. Chaired by Dr. Charlene M. Dukes, President of Prince George’s Community College, the Task Force is comprised of representatives from colleges and universities, non-profit, private sector, local government, public safety, and the school district.

This Prince George’s County suburb has the perfect ecosystem for cheap eats: The rents are low (at least compared to the trauma-inducing ones in the District), the population is diverse (home to a heady mix of Blacks, Whites, Latinos and Asians) and landlords are more open to restaurateurs without a track record.

Like Michael Harrison, the 37-year-old owner of Yia Yia's Kitchen, a high-quality dealer in gyros, dips, spanakopita and other casual Greek fare.

“I wasn’t attracted to that area to begin with, but you have to start somewhere,” says Harrison, stepson of Pete Gouskos, owner of the Parthenon in Chevy Chase. “It’s very hard to go mainstream right out of the blocks.”

Since Harrison opened Yia Yia’s in 2013, he’s become a true believer in Beltsville, in part because of its residents. “Nobody’s stuck up,” Harrison says. “You’re dealing with very nice people.” Read the rest of the article here.

TNI Fund Request For Proposals now open

Deadline: Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 5 p.m.

The 2016 Request for Proposals for the Transforming Neighborhood Initiative (TNI) Fund for Community Innovation are open. Created by The Office of the Prince George’s County Executive and Prince George’s County Public Schools, the TNI Fund will offer program and general operating support of up to $15,000 for organizations serving youth, ages 0-18, in the TNI communities.
