To help you figure out whether an appliance is energy efficient, the federal government requires most appliances to display the bright yellow and black EnergyGuide label. Although these labels will not show you which appliance is the most efficient on the market, they will show you the annual energy consumption and operating cost for each appliance so you can compare them yourself.

Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to freshen up your home! While you're busy with spring cleaning, why not also look for ways to save energy? A home energy audit is like a check-up for your house. It helps you find places where energy might be wasted, like drafty windows, old light bulbs, or leaky air vents.
By fixing these issues, you can save money on your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. Plus, you’re helping the environment by using less energy. So as you tidy up this spring, think about adding a home energy audit to your to-do list. It’s a smart way to keep your home clean, green, and efficient!
Call your utility company to schedule a home energy audit. These audits are funded by a charge on your utility bill and are free to you when you call to schedule.

A new gas rate case involving Chesapeake Utilities, Elkton Gas, and Sandpiper Energy has recently been completed. Because it's been many years since each company last adjusted its rates (Chesapeake in 2006, Sandpiper in 2015, and Elkton in 2018), customers will see a noticeable increase in gas distribution rates starting April 19, 2025.
In addition, Elkton Gas and Sandpiper Energy are being renamed as part of the Chesapeake Utilities brand. This is just a name change — your gas service will stay the same and won’t be affected. Chesapeake Utilities has actually owned Sandpiper since 2013 and Elkton since 2020, so this rebranding is simply to reflect that all three are part of the same company.
In short:
-
Gas rates are going up on April 19, 2025.
-
Elkton and Sandpiper will now be called Chesapeake Utilities.
-
Your service will not be disrupted.

Have you been on the MD supplier shopping websites, mdelectricchoice.com and mdgaschoice.com, and noticed a decline in available energy supplier offers?
Senate Bill 1, legislation that was passed in 2024, went into effect in January 2025. This new law aims to change the regulatory structure for marketing and selling of electricity and gas in Maryland to further protect Maryland residential customers.
As to the availability of energy retail suppliers in Maryland, Senate Bill 1 does not prohibit energy retail suppliers from operating in Maryland, but expands rules to protect consumers that participating energy suppliers must follow. As a result of those rule changes, many energy retail suppliers are voluntarily deciding to no longer operate in Maryland.
