2020 Maryland Teacher of the Year

Congratulations, Teresa Beilstein! 

Teresa Beilstein, from Anne Arundel County Public Schools, joyously accepts her new role!

The 29th Annual Teacher of the Year gala was a night to remember. The event, held each year at Martin's West in Baltimore, recognizes the efforts of Maryland's 24 outstanding County Teachers of the Year and acts as the official announcement for the selection of the Maryland Teacher of the Year. 

This year's winner is Teresa Beilstein, a teacher in Anne Arundel County. Teresa has taught elementary school since 2013 at South Shore Elementary School, an International Baccalaureate school. In her acceptance speech, she described teaching as “the intersection of my passion and purpose.”

Congratulations to Teresa and all of our Maryland Teachers of the Year. We appreciate all you do for our students! 

The State Board honored National 2019 Distinguished Principals and Assistant Principals of the Year for Elementary and Secondary School levels

State Board Actions

October 22, 2019

• Approved candidates for participation in the 2019-2020 Incentive Program for Certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
• Granted permission to publish COMAR 13A.19.01 Commensurate Funding for Charter Schools. The proposed regulation distills the various State Board rulings into a regulatory formula for calculating commensurate funding and creates a one-stop-shop for local school systems and charter schools to refer to when they have questions about the commensurate funding requirement.
• The State Board honored National  2019 Distinguished Principals and         Assistant Principals of the Year for Elementary and Secondary School levels.

Congratulations to our very own Susan Spinnato!

Susan, Director of Instructional Programs, was chosen this month as the 2019 Supervisor of the Year by the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Each year one supervisor from across the United States is selected for exceptional leadership, advocacy, and service to world language teaching and learning.

Artists Gather with First Lady Hogan

Student Artists Display Work for First Lady Hogan's Fall Gallery

Award recipients stop for a quick photo with Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan

Once again, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan hosted an impressive student art display. First Lady Hogan is a long time art education advocate and an accomplished artist herself. Each Fall and Spring, First Lady Hogan selects art pieces from students across the state to hang in the House of Delegates, in Annapolis. 

Student artists and their families are invited to Annapolis to tour the gallery and meet with Mrs. Hogan. What an honor!

MSDE Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) Celebrates 90 Years!  MSDE's DORS celebrates 90 years of helping Marylanders with disabilities. A celebration reception was held last month at the DORS Workforce and Technology Center.  Read more.

Maryland Student Artists Compete to Design New Voting Polls Sticker for 2020 Elections

Final designs chosen for Maryland's "I Voted" Sticker Competition

This October, the Maryland State Board of Elections in partnership with the Fine Arts Office of the Maryland State Department of Education held the “I Voted” Sticker-State Elections Student Art Competition for Maryland student artists in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Student artists from across the state inspired by Maryland voting or elections made history by submitting their original artwork to be selected and printed on voting stickers.

Beginning in 2020, the winning sticker will be distributed at voter polling locations throughout the state. 

The winner of the competition will be announced December 14th! Stay tuned for more information and be sure to check for updates on our Fine Arts Page!
