ICE Out Act

We will not allow Montgomery County to have private immigration detention facilities here. Last week, I introduced the ICE Out Act to make it clear that ICE’s cruel and inhumane facilities have no place in our community.

Currently, our county code does not define immigration detention facilities. The ICE Out Act will define them, call them out and ban them. This legislation will prohibit the county from issuing building and use-and-occupancy permits for privately-owned immigration detention facilities.

Make no mistake, ICE is intent on expanding its operations in Maryland. We see what is happening near Hagerstown and we will not allow that to happen here.

With the ICE Out Act, we are drawing a clear line: Montgomery County will not allow private immigration detention facilities.

Update: Data Center Task Force

Earlier this week the Economic Development and Transportation & Environment Committees voted down my bill to create a Data Center Task Force.

I’m frustrated and disappointed.

My proposal was simple: bring together experts, residents, environmentalists and stakeholders to evaluate the full impacts of data centers and recommend a responsible path forward.

Data centers have real impacts on energy use, land, water, noise, and public health. Taking the time to review those impacts should be the bare minimum.

Montgomery County can be a place where innovation, entrepreneurship and environmental stewardship support each other.

Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month. It continues to be an honor serving with the largest female-majority Council in our history. I am also proud of the work we have done locally to advance gender equity, including the elimination of the gender pay gap in county government.

Ramadan Iftar

It’s always wonderful to break bread with community leaders and neighbors to celebrate the spirit of Ramadan at the county’s official iftar. Montgomery County is the most religiously diverse county in the nation, and this event is a clear reflection of the values we share as a community.

Career Day

My visit to Albert Einstein High School’s Career Day reminded me why investing in our young people is so important. The students asked insightful questions about local and national politics and wanting to make sure everyone is safe living in our community. I left the classroom encouraged and inspired by their passion and potential.

Constituent Corner

A Wheaton resident reported a water leak in their neighborhood that had been running for a few days. My office called WSSC, which deployed a team to repair the leak and the damaged sidewalk.

If you need help navigating Montgomery County government, fill out this form and my team and I will assist you.

Did You Know?

I am excited to share that the Maryland Transit Administration recently launched its MARC Student Saver Program. Students enrolled in a high school, trade/vocational school, college/university, including undergraduate and graduate programs, can save 50% on one-way and monthly tickets for MARC train service.

This program reflects our shared commitment to transit equity by connecting students to educational institutions, jobs, and internships throughout the region. Detailed instructions on how to register for the program are available on the MTA website.
