Road Safety Town Hall

I want to thank the hundreds of residents who joined me on Saturday to discuss solutions for safer streets. With 678 pedestrian and cyclist-involved crashes and 18 fatalities in 2025, it’s clear that community voices are critical to making our roads safer.

Attendees shared concerns, ideas and priorities in interactive breakout sessions focused on safe routes to schools, county roads and state highways.

As Chair of the Transportation & Environment Committee, I remain committed to making our streets safer for pedestrians, bikers, drivers, transit users – everyone.

Here is a link to a video recording of the panel.

The Trust Act

I am proud to serve as a co-lead on the Trust Act, which reaffirms that Montgomery County Police will not cooperate with ICE on immigration enforcement.

In the wake of ICE’s cruel and inhumane treatment of our neighbors, including the horrific killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis, it is all the more important that we use our limited local resources to ensure that Montgomery County remains a safe place for all.

Montgomery County is strongest when every resident feels safe and protected. The Trust Act sends a clear message: our priority is protecting families and fostering trust within our community.

HERO Act Is Now Law

The HERO Act was signed into law in December 2025, ensuring that when a career firefighter or police officer is killed in the line of duty, their surviving spouse will begin receiving monthly pension payments without delay.

The legislation was inspired by the tragic loss of Lieutenant Christopher Higgins, whose passing highlighted a gap in county law that delayed benefits for his family. The HERO Act closes that gap and reinforces our commitment to the brave individuals who risk their lives to protect our community.

On Sunday, January 11, we marked the one-year anniversary of Chris’s passing. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by our first responders and the importance of supporting their families. This law ensures that those who protect us are never left unprotected.

New Legislative Session

The 449th session of the Maryland General Assembly officially began this week, launching a 90-day period of lawmaking that will shape policies across our state. I was glad to be in Annapolis alongside our state leaders as they begin this important work on behalf of Marylanders.

This session will focus on issues that directly affect our daily lives in Montgomery County such as making housing more affordable, supporting economic growth, strengthening public safety, and investing in the services our communities rely on. I look forward to working closely with our state delegation to advocate for our county’s priorities and ensure our residents’ voices are heard throughout the legislative process.

“Seeds of Hope”

The new mural at Westfield Wheaton Mall is a vibrant celebration of creativity and community. Titled “Seeds of Hope,” it brings fresh energy and color to the heart of Wheaton.

Congratulations to local artist Liliane Blom and the 50 community members who helped bring this inspiring design to life. Public art like this makes our neighborhoods more welcoming and reflects the spirit of collaboration that strengthens our community.

Let’s continue working together to make Wheaton an even more colorful, inclusive place for everyone.

Constituent Corner

Neighbors in Kemp Mill recently reached out to my office after learning that a resident was living in her car following an eviction. Community members had already stepped in—checking on her regularly and providing food and basic necessities—but wanted to know how they could do more to help her find stable housing. My team quickly connected with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Housing Stabilization services, which dispatched a team to support the resident and help her take the next steps toward secure housing.

If you need help navigating Montgomery County government, fill out this form and my team and I will assist you.
