Dear Friends,
As of this week, we have entered a new, heightened phase of community need. Beginning tomorrow, November 1, about 70,000 residents in Montgomery County will not receive their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the unlawful actions of the federal administration and government shutdown. This will fall hardest on our residents who are disabled, older, and children who receive these benefits.
At this critical time, we need to do more and provide additional local resources for our residents and non-profit partners. That is why I was proud to announce with my Council colleagues a $7.75 million Public Service Support Resolution. This spending package will provide greater assistance to residents and non-profits adversely affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown and the federal administration’s policies. You can watch the announcement on our YouTube page.
Thank you to our non-profits and local service providers and to my Council colleagues, especially Councilmembers Friedson and Balcombe for their partnership as we put together this package.
The Council will formally introduce this package on November 4 with a public hearing and vote on November 18, the fastest timeline for action on this critical funding package.
During these unprecedented times, Montgomery County will be a community that works together to support one another. If you are in need of any resources, the Montgomery County Council has compiled a list of resources for a variety of needs on our webpage for all residents. There is also a specific page of resources for workers impacted by recent federal actions. For food-specific resources, you can visit the website of our Office of Food Systems Resilience.
In Montgomery County and across Maryland, we value public service and we’re grateful for our federal workers and all they have done to support people across the country and around the world. I am grateful for the new Mobilize Montgomery Federal Workforce Career Center, the nation’s first career center dedicated to helping displaced federal workers find gainful employment created in partnership with WorkSource Montgomery. Learn more about the services offered on their website.
As always, feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or need assistance.
Sincerely,
 Kate Stewart Council President
