The HERO Act

This week I introduced the HERO Act to ensure that when a career firefighter dies in the line of duty, their surviving spouse begins receiving monthly pension payments without delay.

When Master Firefighter Christopher Higgins was tragically killed in January this year, his wife Lisa waited months to receive benefits. The HERO Act closes the gap in our county code.

The bill reaffirms my commitment to supporting the brave firefighters who risk their lives in the line of duty and the families who carry on their legacy.

When firefighters risk their lives to protect us, we must protect them and their families in return.

Honoring Councilmember Gabe Albornoz

Last week my friend and colleague Councilmember Gabe Albornoz announced that he will step down from the County Council on December 1. Councilmember Albornoz’s has left a lasting mark on Montgomery County — from his impressive work as Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee to his deep commitment to ensuring every resident has access to quality care and opportunity. It has been an honor to serve alongside someone whose compassion, integrity, and dedication to public service truly embody the best of our community.

With Councilmember Albornoz’s upcoming departure, the County Council will appoint a new at-large member to serve the remainder of the term through December 2026. Residents interested in this temporary appointment must be a registered member of the same party as the departing councilmember, which is a Democrat, have experience in budgetary and public policy matters, and will not seek elected office in 2026.

Applications are due by November 5 at 5 p.m. and should include a letter of interest and resume submitted to council.clerk@montgomerycountymd.gov. Public interviews and the final appointment vote will take place on December 9.

Federal Resources Center Opening

Montgomery County recently launched the Mobilize Montgomery Federal Workforce Career Center. Located within the Work Source Montgomery job center at 11310 Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, this facility provides personalized coaching, career services, and programs to support federal employees and contractors affected by layoffs.

With over 60,000 federal workers in Montgomery County, the Mobilize Montgomery center is a critical resource for residents navigating career transitions and seeking new opportunities after federal service.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive workplaces. I had the pleasure of joining Seeking Employment, Equality, and Community for People with Developmental Disabilities (SEEC) for Take Your Legislator to Work Day at Servpro of Rockville and Silver Spring North.

During my visit I met Charlie, an enthusiastic young man who takes pride in keeping Servpro’s workshop organized and running smoothly. He loves taking the RideOn to work and his dedication is a reminder that everyone in our community deserves the opportunity to work, contribute, and be valued.

Thank you to SEEC and local employers like Servpro for creating pathways to meaningful, dignified employment for all residents in Montgomery County.

ArtStream’s 20th Anniversary

I was honored to celebrate the 20th anniversary of ArtStream, an organization that brings performing arts opportunities to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ArtStream brings together people of all abilities, giving actors, musicians, and audience members a space to shine, create, and connect.

I am deeply inspired by the passion and creativity of this important organization that uplifts every voice.

Congratulations to ArtStream on this milestone, and thanks to artists, staff, families and supporters who make their work possible.

Constituent Corner

A resident recently reached out seeking vaccination records from their time as a student at Brookview Elementary School (now Roscoe Nix Elementary) in the 1960s. Our office connected with the Department of Health and Human Services and helped them locate their records.

If you need help navigating Montgomery County government, fill out this form and my team and I will assist you.
