It’s the first week of school for MCPS! This edition of the Glass Gazette is all about how Montgomery County is helping over 160,000 students, their families, and educators prepare for the new school year.
I joined Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor and members of the school board for back-to-school celebrations at Northwest High School and Kingsview Middle School in Germantown on Tuesday. We welcomed new and returning students, cheered on teachers and staff, and spotlighted some of our community partners who provide important services to our students and families.
Thank you to everyone at MCPS who made this event a success. Good luck this school year!

I also had the honor of joining Maryland's First Lady, Dawn Moore, on her visit to Ritchie Park Elementary School in Rockville alongside members of our state delegation and Maryland State Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright.
Thank you to Mrs. Moore for visiting some of Maryland's youngest learners!

I’m proud to share that Montgomery College was recently ranked as the #1 community college in the state of Maryland!
The financial news site WalletHub recently released a study on the best community colleges in 2025, which ranked Montgomery College as the #1 community college in the state of Maryland and #17 nationally. WalletHub also ranked Maryland as having the best community college system in the country, and applauded MC’s high median salaries for graduates, good student retention rates and credit offerings for life experiences.

Residents across the county have shared with me their thoughts, questions and concerns about the upcoming changes to our school system. While the Board of Education has sole authority in approving the new boundaries, I have shared with Board members the concerns that some residents have with the initial options.
MCPS has heard these concerns and will be presenting a refined set of options in September. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit the boundary study and academic program analysis websites so you can learn more about the proposals.
I understand that each child and each school community have unique needs. I will continue to share the feedback I hear from residents with MCPS and the Board of Education.
Information about the initial options for both Woodward HS and Crown HS is available on the boundary study website.
Earlier this month I joined MCPS staff and volunteers at Parkland Middle School for the annual Drive for Supplies event to help families prepare for the new school year.
Thank you to Parkland principal Aaron Shin and the MCPS Division of Sustainability and Compliance for organizing this terrific event!

I had a terrific visit to Don Bosco Cristo Rey (DBCR) High School with school president Mark Shriver. We talked about the power of education, community and hope for the future.
Founded in 2007, DBCR serves economically disadvantaged students across faiths and cultures. Students gain professional experience and earn money towards their tuition by participating in the school’s flagship Corporate Work Study program.
I remain inspired by the students' energy and the dedication of the staff.

MCPS offers a myriad of resources for students and families. All public and private school students can get the required back to school vaccines for free at one of the upcoming vaccine clinics.
Additionally, students may receive breakfast and lunch at no cost if they apply for Free and Reduced Price Meals (FARMs) or attend a school operating under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). You can learn more about both of these programs on MCPS’s webpage.
