MLK Day of Service
Join volunteers across the County who are making a difference in our local community during the MLK Day of Service. Participate in local service projects at various recreation centers on Saturday, Jan. 18, or join us for the annual Day of Service and Volunteer Fair at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center on Sunday, Jan. 19. Service projects will include creating "Snow Day" boxes with Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors, assembling hygiene kits and snack bags for unhoused residents, and other efforts to benefit residents and families in Montgomery County.

Eco-Friendly Christmas Tree Disposal
Did you know that your live-cut Christmas tree can be recycled? Once you remove all decorations, lights, wires and plastic, your holiday tree and wreaths can be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on your regularly scheduled recycling day. If you live in an apartment or condo, check with your property manager for specific recycling instructions. Find more information on disposing of your holiday tree on the Department of Environmental Protection’s web page.
Human Rights Hall of Fame
Montgomery County inducted six new honorees into the Human Rights Hall of Fame for their exemplary contributions to advancing human and civil rights in the County and beyond. I was privileged to join the celebration honoring three-term County Executive Doug Duncan, Catherine Leggett, Sherlene Lucas, former Congresswoman Connie Morella, Rev. Dr. Gareth E. Murray and Carl A. Prather, Sr. Each of these individuals has made significant and enduring impacts on our community, and I’m deeply inspired by their work. Congratulations to this year’s inductees who join the more than 100 past honorees who have left positive lasting legacies in Montgomery County and thank you to the Office of Human Rights for organizing the event.
Empowering Our Healthcare Heroes
I was proud to join the American Muslim Senior Society (AMSS), community members and County leaders to celebrate the graduation of over 100 Certified Nursing Assistants through the AMSS Certified Nurses Assistants Scholarship and Employment Program in partnership with the Primary Care Coalition and WorkSource Montgomery. This successful initiative is dedicated to ensuring seniors receive the quality care they deserve, while providing eligible residents with educational, training, and employment opportunities in the healthcare field.

Emory Grove Walking Tour
I recently joined Rev. Timothy Warner and community members for a walking tour of the historic African American community of Emory Grove in Gaithersburg. Emory Grove was originally founded by freed African Americans in 1864. The walking tour was an opportunity to learn more about the community’s history, especially the destructive impact and undelivered promises of Urban Renewal in the 1960s and 1970s, and better understand the redevelopment project, which aims to bring mixed-income homeownership opportunities and other amenities to the area in ways that acknowledge and address prior inequities. The project, a partnership between Montgomery County, the Housing Opportunities Commission, Emory Grove leaders, Habitat for Humanity and other partners, will feature the historic Emory Grove United Methodist Church as the center of the town with the addition of new housing.
Lox and Legislators Breakfast
It was great to connect with hundreds of members of the Jewish community and elected leaders to discuss shared priorities at the JCRC of Greater Washington’s annual legislative breakfast. I’m grateful for all the important work JCRC does for our community, including bringing people of all faiths and backgrounds together, advocating for increased security grants for nonprofits and faith groups, and standing up against hate and bias.
