The Leggetts’ Legacy

The Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building is officially open! This $104 million state-of-the-art facility on Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus has 20 labs, a planetarium, a math and science learning center and a greenhouse. The building is geared to educate future engineers, cyber technicians, computer scientists and other professionals in STEM-related fields.

The Leggett’s have been pillars of Montgomery County for decades. From Mr. Leggett’s outstanding service on the Council and as County Executive, to Mrs. Leggett’s leadership in arts organizations across the region, this building represents the best of our community.

Congratulations to the Leggetts, the Montgomery College students and staff, and the entire community on the opening of this beautiful building!

Local Business Spotlight: Atlantech

For 25 years Atlantech Online has been keeping our community connected. A locally owned telecom provider, they began in 1995 as a dialup Internet Service Provider for businesses, and have since expanded to provide internet, networking and data center services to businesses, education, and government entities.

I enjoyed my recent visit to their Rockville office to learn more about the industry and about Atlantech’s growth to become one of the world’s top 3% networks.

Local Leaders on Climate

Earlier this year I was appointed to the EPA’s Local Government Advisory Council.

I recently traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, for a committee meeting to discuss climate mitigation, water safety, local food production and shared strategies on how our jurisdictions are tackling this important work.

Lincoln is a lovely city and Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird is an excellent host. Make sure to visit if you get the chance.

Fall Festivals

I’ve had a great time attending events across the county over the past few weeks. From community celebrations communities like Burtonsville Day and Poolesville Day, to honoring the life and legacy of Mattie J.T. Stapenk during Peace Day,  or big block parties like the Montgomery Hills Street Fest or Rocktobierfest, there is so much to do here in Montgomery County.

I welcome an invitation to your next gathering. And if you see me in your community, be sure to stop by and say hello!

Faith Security Grants

As houses of worship and religious institutions across the country face heightened threats of hate and violence, the county is dedicating another $1.2 million to protect organizations who have experienced or risk experiencing hate crimes.

No one should be in fear while practicing their faith.

The Nonprofit Security Grant Program enables nonprofit community service providers, houses of worship and other faith-based organizations to cover security expenses and ensure that residents feel safe as they come together to worship and celebrate community.

You can learn more about the program, watch a virtual information session and apply for funds online. The application closes on October 18 at 11:59 pm.

Constituent Corner

A resident in Germantown reached out to me because of serious problems in her apartment. Between a broken refrigerator, mold and a bug infestation, she was beyond frustrated and in urgent need of help. My team contacted the Department of Housing and Community Affairs, and they quickly scheduled an inspection.

If you have an issue you need help with, please fill out our service request form and my team will be in touch.
